assisting the angelic guard as they are having difficulties with a well-known insurgency. You may have two weeks to say your goodbyes and gather your things, but York will expect you to report in on Monday the 10 th .’
‘Yes, Your Highness. I won’t let you down sir,’ Luke said quietly.
Two seats down Caoimhe stifled a long sigh, and as I looked at her I realised she too had been paralysed with worry. As she caught my stare she quickly rubbed away the tear that slid down her cheek and gave me a small smile.
    ‘Right, court adjourned, sine die.’
Moments later the council left the room and we rushed forward to circle Luke. Caoimhe was there first, throwing her arms round him and squeezing him hard.
‘Hey, it’s okay, I’m fine,’ he said.
‘I know, I was just so worried…’ Suddenly she seemed to realise we were there and she let go of him, rubbing another tear away in the process. ‘You’re my best mate,’ she added quickly.
‘You knew, didn’t you? You knew what I’d done and you didn’t tell anyone,’ he asked her gently.
‘Like I said in court, I suspected for a moment, but then…’ she fell silent and shrugged.
‘Wow! You…’ I watched as his eyes softened, taking in her hazel eyes and porcelain skin. A second later he saw Brittany and I standing just behind her and grinned at us.
‘So, I see Adaryn found you then?’ Luke said, eyeing my new outfit. ‘You weren’t gone long though. I thought she was going to have one of her little chats ,’ he said, laughing.
‘Yeah, I think she was planning on it, but she landed just as Mary was about to jump me, so she said we had to get back to inform the guard,’ I said, smirking as I watched his jaw drop.
‘Whatdya mean, Mary was about to jump you?’
Well, obviously she’d been waiting near Alex’s resting place, knowing I’d turn up at some point, and I did.’
‘Oh God! Why didn’t we think of that? I should have thought of it. We’ve scoured the whole damn length and breadth of the country for her, and you bunk off and manage to bump right into her! I should’ve…’
‘Luke, it’s fine. It’s not your fault. Jess is fine, Caoimhe interrupted. The Guard are out there now searching. Come on, let’s get out of here.’
‘I think you need a camomile tea or something. Take a chill pill,’ Brittany said, punching his arm playfully.
‘Come on, it’s been a hell of a day. We’re all shattered,’ Caoimhe said.
‘Yes, but guys, where are we going to go? I am so not going to go back to Daniel’s house. I just can’t face him yet,’ I said, refusing to budge and thinking I’d rather just live out my days in this chilly council castle. ‘Where’s my aunt gone anyway?’ I asked.
‘I thought she said she’d wait for you on the Witches’ Embassy floor,’ Caoimhe said. ‘Come, I’ll show you, but I still think you should speak to Daniel before you leave.’
‘You need to go back anyway, because you left your book there, and all your other stuff,’ Brittany added with a sheepish smile.
‘How do you know where I left my book?’ I asked, shocked.
‘I’m a witch Jess, remember?’ she said shrugging. ‘I did a locating spell the first week I stayed with you. I couldn’t understand why you kept it hidden, what all the fuss is about. I still don’t get it actually. I mean, I know it’s old an’ all, but I don’t get what’s so valuable. It’s just a family book of shadows, and half the pages are so faded I can’t even read them.’
I shrugged, not wanting to give away its worth. I was pretty sure I could trust her, but then so many people had lied to me that I had made a vow to myself not to be hurt again.
‘I guess it’s just really important to me as it was my mum’s and I never had a chance to know her,’ I said, glad I could find a way to be truthful.

Several minutes later Caoimhe was gently knocking on one of the ancient wooden doors in an upper corridor, with Luke, Brittany and I
