girls to completely irresistible world-class beauties, so that those boys really ache when they see what theyâre missing.â
Cecily glanced at the cover of a teen magazine Coco had just given her. ââNew Year, New Youâ?â she sniffed. âThey do these stories every January, and thereâs never a new me.â
âThatâs because you always quit after the third day, all of you,â Coco chided. âThis timeâs going to be different. This time, weâre going to stick to the plan.â
âIâm not sure I want to create a new me,â Sasha said. âI kind of like the regular old me.â
âListen to me, girls,â Coco said. âWeâre at our peak. This is the time when we define what the rest of our lives will be. When we start as little caterpillars in cocoons and emerge as gorgeous butterflies. This is the most crucial moment of our lives! In their own lame way, those boys have given us a gift. Theyâve inspired us to become the best we can be. Sure, weâre cute little high school girls now. But we can be better! Supermodel better. And when those idiot boys see what theyâre missing, theyâre going to eat their pitiful little hearts out.â
âAnd then weâll take them back?â Cecily asked skeptically.
âNo,â Coco said. âThatâs when we really crush them, grind the stilettos into their hearts. We donât need those pathetic high school jocks. We can do alot better than that. Weâre going to become the most glamorous creatures Hillsdaleâs ever seen. Boys will flock to us.â
âDonât they already do that?â Cecily asked.
âIâm telling you, there will be no looking back,â Coco commanded.
âBut what other boys are there?â Sasha asked. âI mean, our guys are the best ones we know.â
âThere are better options out there,â Coco said. âThere have to be.â
The girls shifted uncomfortably in their cushy seats. Haley was finding Cocoâs rant painful yet also curiously cathartic.
âSasha, think about all the heartbreak Johnnyâs caused you over the past year or so,â Coco said. âThe fights. The misunderstandings. All the times he held you back from doing things you really wanted to do. Donât you deserve someone whoâll worship you like the goddess you areâor will be, after Iâm done with you?â
âUh, I guess so,â Sasha said. âBut some of that Johnny stuff was because Iââ
âQuiet,â Coco snapped. âAnd Cecily,â she went on. âSure, Drewâs attractive, in a meathead sort of way.â Cecily gasped. âBut heâs not exactly the sharpest knife in the drawer. Meanwhile, look at you: youâre beautiful, youâre head cheerleader as a junior, youâre a track star and youâre smart enough to apply to the Ivies next year. Shouldnât you be with a guy who can live up toall that? Or will you settle for a dumb jock whoâs going to come back from college two years from now with a beer belly?â
âWell, when you put it that way â¦,â Cecily said.
âAnd you, Haley.â Coco was on a roll now. âIâll admit that in some ways Reese Highland is untouchable. Yes, heâs gorgeous and smart and a star athlete. And he always seemed to be such a good guy. But now look at him: parade a swimsuit model in front of him and he canât keep his filthy hands off her. Ask yourself, Haley: how well do you really know Reese? To me, these pictures say none of us ever knew him very well at all. Heâs got a secret dark side, and thatâs not what you deserve.â
âWell, I am disappointed in him, itâs true,â Haley said. She had trusted Reese, sheâd believed in him, and now she did doubt his integrity. Not only that, she wondered if he ever really cared about her in the first
