thought.
Did I make the vegetable garden disappear too?
Chapter Eight
Vanishing Veggies
âDonât look so worried, Nancy,â Mr. Drew said with a smile. âChip probably got a little hungry, thatâs all.â
âIt wasnât Chip,â Hannah said. âI took Chip to the groomer today. The garden was like this when we got back.â
âIt must have been a hungry deer, then,â Mr. Drew said. âWeâre not too far away from the woods.â
âAt least someone likes veggies,â Hannah said, tossing Nancy a wink.
âI like veggies, Hannah!â Nancy said, trying to smile. What she didnât like was her new wand. It may not have made Sparkle disappear, but when it came to Hannahâs veggie garden, it seemed to be guilty.
That does it
, Nancy decided, eyeing the wand on the table.
That thing goes back tomorrow!
âYouâre bringing your wand to the festival today?â Hannah asked Nancy the next morning.
Nancy slipped the purple and silver wand into her backpack, careful not to point it at herself.
âIâm returning it, Hannah,â Nancy said. âI donât like the color.â
âBut purple is your favorite,â Hannah said.
âUm ⦠Iâve got to go now, Hannah,â Nancy said. She opened the door. âBess and George are waiting outside.â
Nancy blew Hannah a kiss, then ran out the door. She didnât mention the wand to Bess and George as she joined them on the sidewalk.
All three girls were wearing their medieval costumes again that morning.
âI hope we donât have to do any running today,â Bess said, nodding down at her long skirt.
âHow did girls do anything in those days?â
âThey probably never did cartwheels,â George said, sighing. âBoy, am I glad itâs the twenty-first century!â
âMe too,â Nancy agreed. She looked from George to Bess. âDid anyone find Toby Leoâs address last night?â
âGot it!â George said. âToby lives on Minnow Street, four blocks away. That means we can walk there before my mom picks us up.â
âSweet!â Bess said.
Nancy, Bess, and George all had the same rules. They could walk up to five blocks from their houses as long as they were together.
Nancy and Bess lifted the hems of their skirts as they headed to Minnow Street. They found the Leo house in the middle of the block. They also found a mob of kids yelling: âWe want our money back! We want our money back!â
The girls walked over to Shelby Metcalf from their class. Shelby was the loudest yeller in the crowd.
âWhatâs up, Shelby?â George asked.
âToby promised his unicorn hair was good luck,â Shelby yelled into Georgeâs face. âAnd all we had was
bad
luck!â
âYeah!â Quincy Taylor said. âI found out my grandma is moving into my roomâand she snores!â
âAnd I tripped in ballet last night!â Nadine Nardo cried. âDuring my recital. If that isnât bad luck, what is?â
The girls stepped back as the kids kept shouting.
âIf they all had
bad
luck,â Bess shouted above the noise, âdoes that mean Sparkle isnât a real unicorn?â
âNo one ever said unicorn hair was lucky,â George said with a shrug. âJust the whole unicorn.â
A window suddenly flew up. Toby stuck his head out and yelled, âGet lost or Iâll call my dog. And you donât want to mess with him!â
Nancy wanted to giggle. Duncan the sheepdog with his long shaggy hair was a big friendly mush. But the kids walked away, grumbling.
âWhat do
you
want?â Toby called down to the girls.
âWe want to know where you got all that unicorn hair!â Nancy shouted up. âThe ones you sold to those kids.â
âNone of your beeswax!â Toby shouted back.
âYes, it is!â Nancy insisted. âSparkle the
