shall all write and explain. Tell the truth.â
âBut⦠there isnât time!â said Kakko with impatience. âYou remember last time. If I had waitedâ¦â
âThere is always time to do what is right,â said her nan.
âSo, first things first,â ordered Jalli. âLetâs go and see whatâs in the little shed.â
âExciting or what!â said Kakko, leaping to her feet. The young people didnât need a second invitation. They charged out into the garden in their pyjamas.
In the shed they found two cases and five small piles of clothes. There was also a packet with money in it. Jalli picked it up and looked at the notes.
âI think I know these. Iâve seen some like this before. I recognise the sort of script. I think this is the place with the Fellowship Group. You know, with Tod and Kakko â the âKakkoâ you were named after, Kakko.â
âWow! You mean Iâm going to see the person whose name I share?â
âMaybe. If sheâs still around⦠and this is the place I think it is.â
âI bet itâs by the sea!â exclaimed Shaun. âThereâs beach shorts here.â
âAnd another pair,â declared Bandi, âand a cool T-shirt.â
âVery summery,â said Jalli. âThere are womenâs shorts too! And a gorgeous top. And this pile is⦠definitely for you, Kakko.â
âLet me guess, Kakko, there are swimming things,â said Jack.
âHowâd you know, Dad?â
âThe briefest thing you will ever have worn in public. Am I right? At least you donât have a massive bruise to show off.â
âDad?â
âItâs alright Kakko. Dadâs reminiscing. I had a bruise when we first went to this place (if itâs where we think it is) and I wore my first bikini there.â
âOh, rightâ¦â said Kakko a bit confused.
âWell letâs get on with changing then,â said Jalli, âthen we will all write letters to whoever is expecting us tomorrow to say weâve been summoned unexpectedly to somewhere else through a portal and we donât know how long weâll be away. And weâre very sorry to let people down. OK? Off you go!â
âMuch more organised than we were when we found our first white gate,â observed Jack quietly. âWe had had our first adventure, and our first kiss before we told anybody else about the gates.â
âSecond,â said Jalli. Jack looked bemused.
âSecond kiss,â explained Jalli. âWe kissed twice in the garden before you saw me onto the bus in Wanulka. Do you remember?â
âSecond kiss,â smiled Jack. âYou were counting? How many is it to date?â
âOne more than it was a moment ago,â said Jalli engaging him in loverâs kiss.
âOh, sor-ry!â exclaimed Kakko reappearing at the door, ââ¦but if you do choose to snog in the garden.â
âI donât care where,â said her mother. âAnd, besides, itâs not snogging!â
âSure looked like it to me!â
âOK,â laughed Jack. âWeâre off to get ready!â
âThat girl!â sighed Jalli. âThat girl is quiteâ¦â
Jack took hold of his wife and declared, âI canât concentrate. Come here.â And he collected Jalli into his gentle arms and kissed her again. âGod bless our venture,â he murmured.

Twenty minutes later they were all dressed in their various clothes and were sitting at the table eating breakfast together. Matilda collected the various notes and surveyed the addresses. âOK, Iâll take the bus and get these to all the right people before the morning is out.â
âLet
me
go over to the college. I can manage that far,â said Momori.
âSure?â asked Matilda.
âQuite sure. I can take it very steady.â
âThanks
