ham that she unearthed before placing it back in the refrigerator along with several other unusable items.
“She is in the master suite, Gertie,” Donavan said quietly. Gertie stopped everything she was doing and slowly turned to focus entirely on Liana.
Liana tried not to fidget as the eyes evaluated her, digging deep into her soul. Whatever the woman saw she must have liked because her smile got even wider. “I’m so glad the boys have found someone, dear. If you need anything, don’t hesitate to ask. Okay?” She came around the corner to enfold her into a hug.
Liana looked into Donavan’s eyes in panic as this strange woman hugged her. He smiled in approval. Between Donavan and Chase, they changed the subject and started asking questions about the day’s business.
“Well, that Mr. Williams came by while you were gone. He said he would come by later,” Gertie said in a disapproving voice. She apparently didn’t like Mr. Williams.
Chase grunted but didn’t add anything as he slathered mayonnaise onto pieces of wheat bread. He went about slicing tomatoes and onions while Gertie sliced roast beef. Between the two of them, they had sandwiches done in no time at all. It was obvious Chase was comfortable in the kitchen. It was just another facet to absorb in this weird relationship.
Donavan asked questions about the few messages he had grabbed from somewhere that she tuned out and watched Chase work. The small jar of horseradish was held up to her in inquiry, and she nodded with a hand signal to say “a little bit,” not wanting to interrupt Donavan.
She wrapped her hands around the thick sandwich and took a huge, satisfying bite. The flavors burst over hungry taste buds, making her groan in delight. She started happily devouring the meal and only paused when silence descended in the kitchen. She looked up and met the twin smiles of the boys as they watched her unashamedly enjoy herself. She grinned at each of them, not stopping until the last morsel was swallowed.
“That was delicious. I hadn’t realized I was so hungry,” she said in satisfaction. Her refilled iced tea was placed in front of her, and she slowly sipped it waiting for what was to happen next. She needed to use a phone and actually try to explain something that she didn’t understand to her sister. Oh, that is going to be tricky, she thought.
“Donavan, can I use a phone somewhere? I need to make a few calls,” she said when there was a pause in the conversation. His thoughtful gaze was disconcerting, and she fought not to squirm as if she was going to do something naughty.
“Sure, baby. Let’s go into the office,” he said, helping her down. He led the way out of the kitchen and past the great room to a closed set of doors. When he moved out of the way, she saw that he had brought her to a library. There must have been thousands of books in the room. It was a reader’s dream come true. Rows of classics and a whole section of mystery novels that made her fingers itch to rifle through. He went to another set of doors, opening them, displaying an office with two desks on opposite ends of the room. The middle part, filled with a huge sitting area right in front of a brick fireplace, looked cozy. Every room so far in the house was huge.
She sat down on the chair that he directed her to behind one of the desks and handed her the cordless phone. She thought he was going to leave, but he calmly sat down on the edge of the desk, clearly waiting for her. She bit her lip in nervousness and dialed her work number.
“Hey, Sam. Is Dr. Harding there? It's Liana. Hmmm, okay, I’ll hold.” She glanced over at Donavan as he focused his attention on some messages in his hands. The drone of the commentator expounding on the merits of the hospital couldn’t distract her from his presence. “Hi, Stuart. I hate to do this to you on such short notice, but I am going to have to ask for a few weeks of vacation. Gabriella sold Majesty to Chase Farms,
