they piled out
of the SUV and hoisted their packs. “We’ll have at least
one cabin empty each night, maybe more but that’s not
for sure.”
“How many people do the cabins sleep?” Bo
asked, adjusting the straps of his backpack.
“Four, technically speaking.” Lex locked the SUV
and shoved the keys in her jacket pocket. “The cabins
are set up with bunk beds, each level sleeping two
people. So two of you would have to share a bed.” Bo shot Sam a swift, smoldering look. Heat pulsed
through Sam’s groin. He risked a lascivious grin at Bo, who mouthed stop it at him and turned to follow Lex up the trail. Sam stared at his denim-clad ass, enjoying the extra sway he knew Bo was putting in his walk for
Sam’s benefit.
Trotting to catch up, Sam leaned close and
whispered, “Tease,” in Bo’s ear before dropping back to
walk beside Dean. Bo gave him a who, me? look over
his shoulder.
“We do have a staff bed available,” Lex added,
apparently unaware of the flirting going on behind her
back. “One of you can use that if you don’t want to all
share one cabin.”
“I’ll take the staff bed,” Dean spoke up. “Sam, you
and Bo can have the cabin.”
Turning his head, Bo gave Dean a grateful smile.
“That’ll be fine, Dean, thanks.”
“Yeah, thanks,” Sam added, squeezing Dean’s arm. “My pleasure.” Dean bumped Sam’s hip with his.
“Hey, Lex, what time’s sunset tonight?”
“Around six fifteen, if I remember right.” She
glanced at her watch. “That should give you plenty of
time to get settled in and take a look around the Lodge
property, and still be able to watch the sunset. Dinner’s
normally at six, but we do work around the sunset times.
That view’s one of our biggest draws, after all.” “Would you be able to show us the spot where the
sightings have occurred this afternoon, before sunset?”
Bo wondered. “We’re planning to investigate the area
during the usual time of the sightings, of course, and see
if we can capture it on film. But we need to look it over
beforehand if possible, to get a feel for the area.” “Certainly.” Lex clumped up the wooden steps of a
narrow footbridge across a shallow stream. “I may not
be able to take you myself, but I’ll have someone show you the area and answer any questions you have. The staff knows just as much about the place as I do, they
should be able to tell you anything you need to know.” Sam stopped a few seconds to watch the swift little
stream chattering beneath the bridge. Fitful sunlight
pierced through the clouds overhead, sparkling
diamond-like on the surface of the clear flowing water
and bringing out a rainbow of colors in the rocks below.
The bare branches of oaks and birch hissed and rattled in
a sudden burst of chill wind. The air smelled of water,
earth and leaf mold.
“Hey, Sam.”
Looking toward Dean’s voice, Sam found himself
staring into a camera lens. “Dean…”
“Say ‘cheese’.” Dean snapped a picture before Sam
could object, then lowered the camera, eyes sparkling
and a smug smile on his face. “Gotcha.”
Sam shook his head. “Don’t waste pictures on me,
Dean. Save it for the job.”
“Hey, this is my personal camera, not one of the
BCPI ones. I’m gonna fill up all my memory cards with
pics of the three of us and the gorgeous view, just like a
tourist.”
“Oh, well, that’s all right then.” Pushing away
from the bridge’s wooden rail, Sam crossed to the far
bank with Dean beside him. Lex and Bo were already
several yards ahead, deep in conversation. “Hey. Take a
picture of Bo.”
Dean looked at Bo, then back at Sam. “You mean a
pic of Bo’s ass.”
Sam shrugged. “Maybe.”
“Maybe, my perfectly toned rear end. You want
pics of your man’s admittedly fine ass. Don’t even try to
bullshit me.”
Laughing, Sam nudged Dean with his elbow.
“Okay, yeah. Can you blame me?”
“Not hardly. That’s one smokin’ hot scientist
you’re fucking.”
“Actually, he’s the one doing
