he spoke.
“All right, I’ll call when we’re ready to be picked up.” Erik jumped in the front seat then turned to Sarah, “Are you comfortable?”
“As much as I can be.”
“It’s about a ten minute drive in.” Abraham pulled the car out onto the road. “I’ll go inside with you, too.”
“That’s not necessary,” Erik put in.
“I insist.” His tone left no room for argument, but with them both being alphas, that was exactly what would happen.
“That’s probably not a bad idea.” Sarah shifted in her seat so that she could face forward a little. “I really don’t do well with extreme pain.”
“But you fight for a living!” Erik couldn’t have sounded more surprised if he’d tried. “How in the hell can pain bother you when you fought all the time?”
“I never said that I cry or anything.”
“ You fought for a living?” Abraham’s face was a mixture of amusement and disbelief.
“Yes. I’ve been fighting in underground clubs for years. Do you have a problem with that?” Oh, yeah, just like the assholes in the clubs. All he saw was a small female, not a threat to a big guy like himself.
Wrong!
“I don’t have a problem with girls fighting to defend themselves, but fighting for money?” He shook his head. “It’s not right. Women shouldn’t fight. That’s a man’s business. Umph!” Abraham’s head met the steering wheel before he’d even registered the movement.
“Man’s business, my ass!” Sarah’s face was red, her amber eyes shining like hot coals, and she felt a sudden spike of lust from Erik. Felt but ignored. She knew her temper was about to get the best of her, but damn it, this alpha was looking to be just like the other’s she’d encountered and she was going to give him a piece of her mind anyway. “I’m undefeated, asshole! I’ve escaped six packs where alphas tried to force a mating. Six! Not to mention the stupid bastards I have dogging my heels, which is why I have to fight for money. I can’t work; I can’t use my bank account or credit cards or they’ll find me. It’s been months since I’ve slept in a bed and years since I’ve felt safe, so don’t give me any shit about what I’ve had to do to survive!” She was panting, positively seething.
The Land Rover was pulled off on the shoulder. Abraham looked horrified by either her rant or what she’d done. Not that she gave a damn. Erik, on the other hand, looked proud.
A small trail of blood snaked from Abraham’s nose and over his lip. “I apologize if I insulted you, but was that necessary?” he grumbled as he wiped the blood from his face.
Sarah considered that for a moment before replying, “I feel a little better now, so, yes, it was.” She did feel better. In fact, she felt great…and horny as hell.
Shifting her focus back to Erik, she found him blushing like a little boy. “Sorry,” he mumbled and shifted in his seat.
“Well, if you’re finished with your girly-fit, I’ll get back on the road.”
Wham!
“Damn it! Stop hitting me!” He leaned his massive frame so far forward that his forehead pressed against the windshield in his attempt to avoid her fists.
“Then shut up!” Sarah crossed her arms over her chest and fumed. “By the way, genius, pain doesn’t make me whine and cry. It pisses me off.”
“If this is how you get when you’re pissed, we’ll have to restrain you for the exam.” Erik looked slightly worried now.
“Oh, I’m not pissed right now. I’m just a little upset about the inner workings of your troglodyte brother’s brain.”
“What the hell did she just call me?”
“Aw, was that word too big for you?” Sarah sighed. This wouldn’t get them anywhere, so it looked as if she’d have to be the bigger person here. After all, he was trying to help her, and she did tend to fly off the handle with little provocation when she was hurting. Guess she would have to be the one to take the highroad before this whole situation went any
