show?â
âMost of it, yes. Dannyâ¦?â
âPlease look lovingly at me,â he pleaded, darting a glance toward the other table. âMary Kate is really turning on the charm. Donât sacrifice meâ!â
âOh, you crazy man,â she laughed. She laid a hand on his forearm. âDanny, I do like you.â
He grinned. âI like you, too. Donâtlet King upset you. He improves on closer acquaintance.â
âYou told me that two years ago, and it hasnât happened yet,â she reminded him.
âYou havenât gotten close enough yet.â
Her eyes darkened. âI donât want to,â she said fervently.
âAre you afraid of him, Shelby?â
She looked up. âTerrified!â she admitted. âDanny, donât leave me alone with him again.â
âHoney, Iâm trying,â he laughed. âItâs just that Mary Kate keepsâ¦â
âYouâre going to miss the river race,â King said, coming up beside them with a can of beer in one lean hand.
âCanât let that happen, can we?â Danny chuckled. He picked up their refuse and took it over to a nearby garbage can, leaving her with King.
âWhat do I do about an innertube?â she asked him conversationally.
âForget it,â he bit off. His jaw tautened. âYouâre not going to kill yourself in the river to prove anything.â
âBut, Kingâ¦!â
âScratches on that perfect skin would put you out of work, wouldnât they?â he asked with an uncanny insight.
She glared down at her sandaled feet. âThat seems to bother everybody more than it bothers me,â she said tightly. âIâm not made of glass. I donât care if I get scratched.â
âNice try, honey,â he said with a cold smile. âBut Iâm not that dense. Save the act for Danny. Heâs young enough to be taken in by it.â
She started to argue, but what was the use? Heâd never change his mind about her. She turned to Danny and slid her arm through his as he cameback from emptying the trash. He smiled down at her.
âStill want to get in the river?â he teased.
âSheâs not racing,â King said firmly, his dark eyes meeting his brotherâs doggedly. âItâs too risky.â
âTell her, not me,â Danny laughed. âIâm not that much of a daredevil. Now, he is,â Danny told Shelby, jerking a thumb toward his elder brother. âHeâd scare you to death in a canoe.â
âI wonder,â King said narrowly, studying Shelby in earnest.
âOh, Danny!â Mary Kate called, moving forward to capture the arm Shelby didnât have a claim on. âWould you get into the three-legged race with me? I donât have a partner.â She made it sound like a federal offense.
Danny looked at Shelby apologetically. âDo you mind?â he asked, but Mary Kate was already dragging him away.
âI thought you were engaged to him?â King murmured, and there was a glimmer of amusement in his eyes. He drained the can of beer and tossed it into a nearby trash can.
Shelby clasped her hands behind her, staring at the retreating couple and smiled wistfully at her only source of protection as it was shanghaied away. âA willful girl is Mary Kate Culhane,â she murmured. âYou planned this, didnât you, King?â
âHell, yes,â he admitted shamelessly. âMary Kate has something to offer.â
âIndeed she does,â Shelby agreed quietly. âA sixteen thousand acre ranch with a herd of purebred Santa Gertrudis cattle, oil rights, and three real estate companies. And all I have to offer,â she added in a subduedtone, âis a common background, a career that ends when I reach thirty or thereabout, and an infamous mother.â She turned away, feeling the hurt all the way to the bone, as if sheâd really been
