but ravenous nonetheless, Erin dug into her home fries.
“Why must I have a motive to make my sister breakfast?” His brows were raised and his eyes were wide, feigning innocence. She glared at him, but all that did was make him chuckle. He turned toward the stove and flipped his own over-easy egg from the pan to the plate in his hand.
“Oh please. You’re just guilting me into not cancelling our plans tonight with Josh. Bailing out on you after you’ve made me breakfast would make me look like a real ass.”
“Correct. And not just breakfast, my dear. A day of pampering and shopping awaits you. Cancelling on me after all that would indeed make you look and feel like a real asshole. Mission accomplished.”
Paul poured her a cup of coffee and slid it across the counter in her direction. She shook her head at him and his smile grew. He could be arrogant, demanding and straight-up obnoxious at times. But she loved him dearly. And she had no desire to disappoint him and ruin all the plans he had made for her today. He was being incredibly sweet. But he was also putting himself out there, leaving himself vulnerable and attempting to let her go, even if it was just for one night. She didn’t need Dr. Cahil to tell her that tonight was not just a big night for her, but for Paul as well. Erin sighed and sipped her coffee. Did he have any idea how much he meant to her? She had told him many times that she loved him, but did he have the slightest clue how much she cherished their relationship? Erin took another sip, set her mug on the counter and smiled. “You look quite pleased with yourself.”
Paul sat down on a bar stool and pulled his plate of steaming eggs and potatoes closer to him. He was beaming and looking proud and content. She hadn’t seen him like that in ages. He didn’t respond. Instead he took a bite of his eggs and smiled, all the while chewing. She had missed this, how relaxed they could be together, when he wasn’t checking locks and sweeping each room. She would agree to pampering and shopping every weekend if it brought him the peace he truly deserved. Tonight, they would have fun and laugh and attempt to resurrect two people that needed to start living.
Chapter Six
O ur limo awaits!” Paul shouted from the living room.
Limo. This was way over the top.
Erin had already agreed to a manicure, pedicure, facial and haircut earlier that day. Not to mention her shopping trip to Roberto’s. Erin settled on a short black dress that hugged her curves and strappy heels that made her legs look like they went on for miles. She wore her hair loose and, thanks to the makeup artist at the salon, her smoky eyes definitely had that come-hither look. The whole ensemble gave off a sexy, but not slutty, vibe.
They arrived at the club around seven thirty and due to the early hour, they didn’t have too much difficulty finding a table. Erin looked around and took in the swanky atmosphere. She was thankful that she had gone with the dress she had chosen. The other one, the dress that was definitely more comfortable and didn’t show as much boob, would have looked frumpy here. Reminded of her cleavage, she looked down to make sure that her girls were still in place and not misbehaving.
Paul ordered her a glass of wine and a beer for himself. He knew her too well. She wasn’t a big drinker. If she started her night with wine and then switched to beer with the occasional shot thrown in the mix, she would last longer and not get too drunk or sick.
The first glass of wine went down quickly, and Erin soon found herself getting reacquainted with the hum and buzz that only a club can bring. People were filtering in now. A line had formed outside, and she was thankful that they had arrived before the crowds had set their sights on the place.
She had just checked her phone for the time when a waitress came to the table with a lemon drop shot and a bottle of Heineken. Paul raised his beer and Erin lifted her shot in
