Jenny still felt protected and was glad that peter was here with her, but Peter had some uncertainties about how he had been touching his sister. Not that what he had done was wrong, at least in the general sense, but he knew that Irene would have had a fit had she found them like this. He knew he would have to work hard to push those thoughts out of his mind, Irene wasn’t here and could only influence him if he let her. They got up and dressed, each avoiding the issue of how they had been holding the other in sleep. Both had busy days and they were going to need to devote their attention to other things.

    Peter’s new friend picked him up shortly and took him to the job site. He would have a lot to do and they started early. Mrs. Simmons had agreed to drop Jenny at the diner to see how she would do as a waitress, but her first experience wouldn’t start until the breakfast rush was over.
    Jenny was introduced to Gerry and realized as they talked that she was looking at jenny’s hair. Jenny had forgotten her hat and now was upset that everyone would be staring at her. Gerry sensed something was bothering Jenny, so asked "Are you OK?"
    Jenny was certain that she would lose this job as soon as she opened her mouth, but weakly replied "I guess so."
    Gerry knew better, so continued "You can tell me honey. No one here is going to hurt you."
    "My…my hair." Jenny managed.
    Gerry had seen it but wasn’t dwelling on it, deciding Jenny would say something if she wanted to. "Chemo?" she asked cautiously.
    "What?" Jenny asked, not understanding the question.
    "Cancer medicine? Did that make you lose your hair?" Gerry asked softly, not wanting anyone else to hear.
    Jenny could only nod, she remembered what peter had told Gary and stuck to the story.
    "It’s OK, honey. You aren’t the only one who has gone through that. We’ll see if we can find you a hat or maybe a scarf to cover up. Don’t let it bother you, if someone doesn’t like it, it is their problem, not yours." She consoled.
    Jenny wasn’t so sure, but nodded her agreement, following Gerry into the back to find a uniform that would fit her.

    Jenny got home after spending 5 hours at the diner. She had been apprehensive about what to expect, but once she was working at something, learning what she would be doing, she forgot her concerns and concentrated on the matter at hand. She had brought home sandwiches for herself and Peter, a side benefit of working at the diner.
    Peter came in an hour later, he had put in a full 8 hour day, getting a ride home from one of the carpenters. He found that the work was tedious and physically demanding, but not so difficult he had any problems. He was meeting others and for the first time in his life, he was really interacting with someone other than a family member. He didn’t know it at the time, but Gary had asked some of the more experienced workers to keep an eye on him and several took him under their wings, starting to show him how to do things other than just picking up around the job site.
    Jenny had been on her feet longer than she was used to so was sitting on the sofa waiting for Peter as he got in. He looked tired and drained from the work and heat of the day, but he was happy that he was doing something, able to take care of Jenny.
    "I have dinner here, Peter." She started.
    He looked at the food, he hadn’t eaten lunch since he didn’t have any money for lunch yet. He would get paid at the end of the week so that would change soon.
    "I need to get out of these dirty clothes, but I am really hungry. Be back in a few minutes." He offered as he went into the bathroom to shower.
    Jenny waited for his return to eat with him, she had already changed into her nightgown. Peter was again in his boxers as he came out,
