in?â
âThatâs the question.â
âMaybe Marcyââ
âShe still has her key, Jack,â I said. âLook, I better go and see how she is, and stay with her while the detectives question her. Sheâs ready to fall apart.â
âEddie,â Entratter said, âare you sayinâ somebody came into my hotel and killed my secretary?â
âI donât know what else to say, Jack.â
âShe couldâve done it herself,â he said. âMaybe the door was left unlocked, maybeââ
âWhat did she stand on?â
âWhat?â
âTo tie the belt around the pipe and then hang herself,â I said, âwhat did she stand on? Thereâs no chair, no ladderââ
âThe trash can?â
âNot big enough.â
âMaybe she stood on the edge of a sinkââ
âShe couldâve done that, and jumped off,â I said, âbut still ⦠how did she reach the pipe to tie off the other end of the belt? And we donât even know if it was her belt?â
âJesus ⦠did you tell Hargrove this?â
âOh no,â I said, âDetective Hargrove wants to find out the facts all by himself.â
âBut you are gonna tell him, arenât you? Sometime?â
âJack, if I figured it out, he should be able to figure it out, donât you think?â
âHeâs kind of an idiot, Eddie.â
âYeah, well,â I said, âmaybe his partner will dope it out. Heâs kinda smart.â
âJesus,â he said, âmurder. Man, I hope youâre wrong, Eddie.â
âSo do I, Jack.â
TWELVE
T he floor was closed off. Nobody allowed up, nobody allowed down. I sat in Entratterâs office with him, trying to talk about something other than a possible murder.
The subject of Edward G. Robinson came up.
âOh damn â¦â Jack said.
âWhat?â
âEddie Robinson is cominâ in tomorrow.â
âWell, thatâs tomorrow,â I said. âThe cops should be gone by then.â
âLetâs just hope youâre not in jail tomorrow.â
I sat up straight in my chair.
âWhy would I be in jail?â
âBecause Hargrove hates your guts,â Entratter said. âIf he can hang this on you, he will.â
âMy experience with Hargrove tells me heâs gonna call this a suicide.â
âMaybe it is.â
âShe have any reason to kill herself?â I asked.
âNot that I know of.â
âAnd Marcy doesnât know. Is-was she close to anyone else?â
âNot that I know of,â Entratter said, âbut then I donât know who sheâs friends with.â
âShe wasnât a very pleasant woman,â I said. âMaybe she had no friends.â
âShe wasnât pleasant to you,â he said. âShe didnât like you. That didnât extend to everyone.â
âWell,â I said, âitâll be up to the cops to find all that out â if they bother to ask.â
Entratter frowned.
âNow, wait a minute,â he said. âI wouldnât want this to be called a suicide if itâs not.â
âThatâs gonna be up to Hargrove,â I said. âHeâs the man in charge.â
âI was kiddinâ you, Eddie,â he said. âI donât expect him to arrest you, but I do expect him to investigate.â
âHe will investigate,â I said, âunless he calls it a suicide.â
Entratter sat back in his chair, looking unhappy.
âWhen does Robinson get in?â
âTomorrow at noon.â
âAnd Frank?â
âHeâll be here tomorrow around three.â He was still frowning.
âAm I supposed to take Mr Robinson to the tourist sights?â
âNo,â Jack said, âhe wants to play poker.â
âIn the casino.â
âNo, the way they play it in the
