you.â
âAnd let me live?â
âYes.â
âAnd if they wonât?â
âYou have to hide.â
He shook his head. âI wonât hide. I wonât live my life that way.â Thereâs another way,â he reminded her, and he couldnât believe that heâd even consider it. But since meeting her in the alley, sheâd turned his world upside down. Everything heâd believed sheâd proven false, so maybe this idea wasnât that crazy. Because the only way for him to become strong enough to fight them off was to become one of them. âTurn me.â
Chapter Five
âTurn you?â Jennifer asked, incredulous that he would even consider it. She must have heard him wrong.
âIs there any other way to keep the entire society from coming after me?â
âIâll explain about what Roger did to Bryan. They may make an exception.â
âFor a man whose rage turned him into a vampire hunter? For a man who turned your sister into a vampire hunter?â
âBut she didnât kill anyone,â Jennifer reminded him. âAnd I donât think you have either.â
âI doubt thatâll matter,â he replied. âYou think theyâll let me live, knowing what I do? I just donât know about their existence. I know how to end their existence.â
She shuddered as she conceded the logic in his thinking. There was no way the society would make an exception for him. âMaybe it wonât come to that. Maybe you really did kill Roger.â
âYou donât believe that. Not with the way he flew out of here. And even if I didnât miss, your special surgeon probably could have saved him.â
She nodded.
âSo there is no other option for me. I wonât spend my life hiding.â
âBut you despise vampires,â she reminded him.
âI despise one vampire,â he said. âJust the one who killed my brother. Heâs a monster. But youâre not. Youâre not any different now than you were as a human.â
She smiled at his ignorance. âEverythingâs different. I had to give up my family. My friends.â
âI have nothing to give up,â he said. Then, as if just realizing what heâd admitted, he solemnly repeated, âI have nothing.â
Touched by the vulnerability on his handsome face, Jennifer stepped closer to him. âLiamâ¦â
âIâve been so consumed with my quest for vengeance that I wasnât really living. I have nothing to give up, Jennifer.â He slid his hands around her waist. âTurn me.â
âItâs not just people or things. Youâre giving up your lifestyle,â she said. Wistfully she added, âSunshine.â
âIâve been living in darkness already,â he insisted. âI wonât miss the sun. I would miss you, though, if I had to go into hiding.â
âMe?â Was it possible that he was feeling it, too, this emotion that connected them?
âYouâre the only one who knows Bryan like I did. Youâre the one person I can share his memory withâthe one person besides me who truly cared about him.â
She nodded. She had loved her friend. But she was afraid that she was falling in love with his brother. And Liam, as loyal as he was, probably wouldnât let himself fall for herânot when he believed that Bryan was the one who should have been with her.
âWhat would he want you to do now?â Liam asked. âWouldnât he want you to protect me?â
âBut I wouldnât be protecting you. I might be hurting you more. Iâve never even bit a human, let alone turned one. Itâs dangerous. You have to take out a specific amount of blood,â she explained. âToo little and you wonât turn. Too much and Iâll kill you.â
âI know the risks. I extensively investigated the society,â he reminded
