study hall the next day, Kathi tapped furiously on the class computer. âWhat do you think?â she asked when she finished.
Zee read the script out loud. âDylan leans toward Lily. Slowly, his face moves closer to hers.â Zeeâs heart pounded. âJust as their lips are about to meet,â Zee continued, âBrianna appears and stops them.
âUmmmâ¦that doesnât seem realistic to me,â Zee said. âWouldnât Brianna be happy for her friendâyou know, that sheâs going to kiss the boy she likes?â
Kathi shook her head. âNo way,â she said. âItâs just like Romeo and Juliet . Brianna knows their crush is doomed, so sheâs keeping them apart for her friendâs own good.â
Zee was suspicious. âAre you sure itâs not because her best friend is jealous ?â
âIâm sure. No one was jealous in Romeo and Juliet .â
âI guess youâre right,â Zee mumbled.
Â
After the final period of the day, Zee met Chloe at her locker.
âIâve got a ton of homework,â Chloe said, looking lopsided under the weight of her homemade patchwork book bag.
Zee looked at her assignment book. âMe too,â she said. âMath, science, and French. Plus, we have that English quiz tomorrow.â
âAre you still coming over to my house to study for it?â Chloe asked.
âYup. I told my mom I would go home from school with you.â Zee grabbed her books out of her locker and shoved them into her bag. The lockers were made of recycled wheat board, so the door made a soft thud when she shut it.
Zee could barely lug her heavy bag down the hall. She hadnât gotten far with Chloe when she spotted Landon approaching.
Great! Zee groaned silently. Just when Iâm looking like the Hunchback of Notre Dame. Maybe he wonât see me. She looked at the ground in the opposite direction.
âHey, Zee!â Landon called out.
Darn it! Zee stood up as straight as she could. âOh, hi, Landon,â she said, trying to sound casual. âWhatâs up?â
âMr. P just told me he wants us to work on the scenewhere Lily and Dylan first meet,â Landon began. âDo you have time now?â
âSure.â
âBut we were going to study for the English test,â Chloe reminded her.
âItâs just a quiz,â Zee said. âLandon and I wonât take long. Iâll come over in an hour.â
Chloe adjusted her book bag strap on her shoulder. âAll right. Itâll probably take me that long to drag this thing out of the building,â she said.
Â
âYouâre not going anywhere,â Mr. P boomed, grabbing Zeeâs arm. âIâm calling the police!â
âLet go of me!â Zee yelled, trying to break free from her teacherâs grip. Mr. P was playing a store owner who accuses Lily of shoplifting.
âHalt!â Landon protested loudly. âUhh. Ummm. Eh.â He heaved a sigh and threw up his hands. âI have no idea what to say.â
âDonât sweat it, Landon,â Mr. P reassured him. âWhat would you say if it happened in real life? Just pretend youâre really Dylan, and you need to convince me to let Lily go.â
Landon looked at Zee. âLet her go!â he shouted, getting into character.
âWhy? Whatâs it to you?â Mr. P snarled. Zee tried not to giggle. She didnât want to ruin Landonâs concentration.
âBecause I know she would never steal anything,â Landon went on. âI can tell just by looking at her. Iâve never seen such an honest face in my life.â
Zee could feel a blush fill her cheeks.
âAll right,â Mr. P said, releasing his grasp. âBut if I ever see either one of you in my store again, Iâm going to call mall security.â Then Mr. P turned into their teacher again. âSee? You rocked it.â
âCool.â
