gatewayâs existence a secret.â
Quinn was incredulous. This was getting harder and harder to believe . . . except that heâd seen the proof. Then again, he had just shown Âpeople he could turn out Las Vegas by snuffing some candles, so incredulity was an integral part of his makeup. âOK, then let me get this straight. You found a portal to a whole other world. With Âpeople in it. And youâve just been, what, sitting on it?â
âWeâve been studying it from every possible angle,â Chaudri said.
There had to be an endgame here. Billion-Âdollar companies didnât study things. They profited from them.
More importantly, he needed to know where he fit in.
As if anticipating that question, Kiara tapped her control panel. The image changed again, to a photo of a man in a white lab coat. He was middle-Âaged, maybe a little older, with wire-Âframe glasses and a pronounced nose. Looked like a cardsharp, the kind of guy whoâs always thinking two moves ahead.
âThis is Richard Holt,â Kiara said. âThe head of our research team since this project started.â
âHeâs a nice-Âlooking man, I suppose.â
Kiara scowled.
âSix days ago, he went rogue, and disappeared through the gateway,â Logan said.
Quinn stole a glance at their faces. Kiaraâs was cold calculation, almost hidden animosity. On Chaudriâs, sadness warred with admiration. Interesting. âMaybe he just needed a vacation,â he said.
Chaudri barked a laugh. It came out nervous. âDr. Holt didnât believe in vacations.â
âHe also took a backpack full of technology thatâs not allowed on the other side of the gateway.â
âWhat technology are we talking about?â
âThatâs above your clearance level.â
That excuse is starting to get real old.
âWhatever his reasons, the executives want him retrieved,â Kiara said. âQuickly and quietly.â
Quinn made a face, to show that he wasnât happy about the clearance thing. âThat sounds like Loganâs department.â
âIt is,â he said.
âAnd we have Chaudri, for the cultural angle,â Kiara said.
âI guess youâre all set, then,â Quinn said. He still didnât know why theyâd brought him here, why theyâd shown him something that was clearly a tightly held secret. They wanted somethingâÂsomething worth more than a half million dollars.
Kiara sighed. She almost seemed to agree. âSome of our superiors are concerned because weâve all been working with Holt for a long time. He knows our tactics. Our tendencies.â
AhâÂthe reveal at last. âBut he doesnât know me,â Quinn said.
âExactly,â she said. âAnd given their preindustrial technology level, your talents for illusion might be useful in a tough spot.â
âIt certainly is an interesting way to go,â Logan said.
Kiara frowned at him.
So they did want a performance out of him. âThe logistics would be tough,â Quinn said. âIâm used to working on a stage.â
âYouâll have substantial company resources at your disposal,â Kiara said. âMaterials, schematics, a fully trained engineering team. Pretty much whatever you need.â
âI guess I can draw up some ideas,â he said.
âThey donât even have to be your own. If any of your competitors have something that would be useful, we can have the details for you in twenty-Âfour hours.â
âGood luck with that,â Quinn said. âMagicians are a secretive lot, from what I hear.â
âYouâre one of the most secretive, and we got you here in, what, fourteen hours?â
âTouché,â he said.
âWeâll provide you with virtually anything you need to create the best magic that you can muster. And trust me, itâll have to be
