turned slightly, draping one arm over the wheel as he lounged back into his corner. He definitely filled up more than his fair share of the car, Filomena thought. And she couldn’t help noticing the faint gleam in his gaze.
„We made a good catch here just at dawn yesterday,“ Trent murmured. „The lake was like glass, and you could see every tiny ripple the fish made. Watching you is a similar experience. Did you know that? You’ve got a smooth, glossy surface, but it’s easily disturbed by whatever emotion you’re feeling. I like that. The laughter moves through your eyes and across your mouth the way the ripples move on the lake. So do irritation and sympathy and friendliness and anger.“
„Did you bring me here to tell me I’m easy to read?“
„No.“ He reached over and unbuckled her seat belt. „I brought you here to see if passion moves through you the way all your other emotions do. I want to see if I can feel the ripples.“
Filomena tensed as she found herself being enfolded in Trent’s arms, her soft, slender frame cradled against his hard body. She felt the heat in him and inhaled the faint tang of soap and after-shave and an indefinable male essence that threatened to swamp her senses.
„So you’re running an experiment on me, is that it?“ she asked.
„Call it what you want.“ He looked down into her face as his hand moved through her hair and found the triangle of flesh exposed by the deep V in the back of the gown.
Filomena shivered a little as his warm fingers made contact with her bare skin. „Just remember you’re not the only one who can run an experiment.“

He traced the graceful line of her spine with a blunt-tipped finger. „I’ll share the results I get with you if you’ll share the results you get with me.“
Filomena was torn between a deep, sensual curiosity and an abrupt burst of uncertainty. She wasn’t really afraid of Trent, but she was suddenly afraid of the situation. For two weeks she had adroitly managed to prevent anything from occurring. Now the decision had been taken out of her hands. This wasn’t going to be just a casual experiment, and she knew it. Her nervousness, she realized, stemmed from the fact that she was fairly certain Trent knew it, too.
But it was too late to call a halt now. Filomena felt both trapped and oddly comforted in the strong arms that were holding her. Her hands moved upward to brace herself against Trent’s broad shoulders. She lifted her face to find the truth in his eyes, but his mouth came down on hers before she could see anything clearly.
Filomena’s coral-colored nails sank reflexively into the fabric of Trent’s white shirt, biting into the hard, muscled skin underneath as she endured the first impact of his kiss. Somehow, she thought dazedly, it just wasn’t what she had been expecting. But she also realized she couldn’t have described just exactly what she had been expecting.
Perhaps she had been anticipating more of a tentative, exploratory approach. Perhaps she had assumed there would be a little more initial hesitation. She should have known better, she told herself.
She should have realized that with this man everything would be deliberate, bold and inevitable. She ought to have expected this heat and this fierce, unleashed demand. He was not the kind of man who would do anything in a halfhearted or hesitant way. Most especially he would not make love to a woman with anything other than full power.
Trent’s kiss was a deep, ravening thing that engulfed Filomena even as it compelled her response. Her mouth opened of its own volition, granting him an even more intimate access. When she felt the probing touch of his tongue, she shuddered.
Trent’s response was a groan of hungry desire that she could feel deep in his chest. His hand moved across her bare shoulders to the narrow sleeve of her dress. „I knew it,“ he muttered against her mouth. „I knew I’d be able to feel the ripples go through
