âWhat are you doing?â
âYou missed it, Amanda,â Victoria replied. She smiled, and the candlelight flickered eerily in her eyes. âWe called up the evil spirit. Itâs here!â
Chapter 8
THE EVIL APPEARS
âH uh? No!â Amanda gasped.
âYes,â Victoria insisted. âCanât you feel it? Canât you tell itâs here?â
Amandaâs knees felt shaky. Her heart pounded. âYou shouldnât have done it!â
Keesha laughed. âWe didnât.â
âHuh?â
âRelax, Amanda,â Natalie told her. âVictoria was just joking. We didnât call up any evil spirit.â
Amanda sagged against the door frame in relief.
âWeâre about to call it, though,â Victoria said.
Amanda tensed up again.
âWe were just waiting for you,â Janine explained. She gestured at the black candles, making the flames waver wildly. âHow do you like the atmosphere?â
âYou shouldnât be playing this game!â Amanda cried.
âItâs not a game,â Keesha protested. âTell her, Janine.â
âYou remember those papers in the bottom of the box?â Janine asked. âWell, they were pages that had been torn out of a book. A really old book, I think, because the paperâs real thin and crinkly and rusty colored. Anyway, it gave instructions on how to call up the Evil.â
âRight. You sit in a circle,â Keesha said. âAnd you light one black candle for every person there.â She pointed to an empty chair with a candle in front of it. âThatâs yours, Amanda.â
âCome on, Amanda.â Victoria patted the empty chair between her and Natalie. âSit down so we can get started.â
âNo!â Amanda shouted.
The others stared at her, startled.
âYou think this whole thing is a joke, but itâs not,â Amanda told them. âItâs really dangerous.â
Victoria and Keesha laughed. Janine snickered. Even Natalie smiled. âCome on, Amanda,â Keesha said. âYou donât really think anything is going to happen, do you? Itâs just a goof.â
âItâs not!â Amanda protested sharply. âI asked Adele about Corky Corcoran. And you know what she told me? Everything that Corky wrote really happened! Her sister Bobbi died. Bobbi was scalded to death in the locker-room shower. And she wasnât the only one. Other people died, too. The Evil possessed some of the cheerleadersâtook over their minds. And they killed without even knowing it!â
âWell, that wonât happen this time,â Janine assured her. âCorkyâs letter told us how to kill the Evil, remember? It has to be drowned.â
âSee, Amanda?â Keesha grinned. âAll we have to do is tie it to a cement block and toss it in the lake.â
âThis isnât funny,â Amanda said. âDonât you get it? If we call the spirit up, it might possess one of us. One of us might start killing!â
âGet a grip, Amanda,â Janine told her. âYouâre practically hysterical.â
âI canât help it!â Amanda took a deep breath and forced herself to speak more calmly. âWe shouldnât mess around with this.â
Keesha rolled her eyes. Natalie and Victoria exchanged a skeptical glance.
âDonât be such a baby,â Janine moaned. âItâs just for funânothing is going to happen.â
The others nodded.
âHow can you be sure nothing will happen?â Amanda asked.
âBecause none of this spirit stuff is for real.â Natalie gathered up her dark hair and began twisting it into a long braid. âItâs like playing with the Ouija board.â
Amanda stared at her. Iâm surprised Natalie wants to go along with anything Janine suggested, she thought. But at least theyâre not fighting.
âCome on, Amanda,â Victoria
