since. I had to stay up half the night comforting him.” She pulled the deer roast out of the oven.
“I’m sorry, Mom. I didn’t know. I’ll go talk to him,” Sierra sighed and turned to find her brother.
“He’s in his room, ran up there after you yelled at him,” her mom said.
Sierra strolled to the back staircase and climbed the stairs, stopping in front of Jason’s room. She rested her forehead on the cool door. Her mind filled with turmoil, she took a deep breath to calm her frayed nerves.
God, my life is screwed up.
“ Don’t worry so much, little one. We’ll help you. That’s what mates are for, and we aim to be the best!” Roman’s mental voice wrapped her body in a comforting blanket.
Ignoring his words, she knocked on her brother’s door and opened it. She heard Roman and Garth’s laughter in her mind.
“Yeah?” Jason sighed and looked up.
“I’d like to talk to you.” She walked further into the room towards the bed.
“Whatever.” He continued to ignore her.
Sierra glanced around the room, which looked neat as ever. He lay on his bed and stared up at the posters taped to the ceiling. Sierra sat down on the bed next to him.
“Jason, I’m sorry I shouted at you earlier. I’m a little nervous with Garth and Roman here. I shouldn’t have taken it out on you. I want you to know I’m not going to let anyone hurt me. You know I can protect myself.”
She smiled and patted his leg.
Jason’s gaze met hers. “I have dreams, Sierra. They won’t go away. I see the Trolls. They hurt you and take you away.” Tears rolled down his cheeks.
Her arms opened, and Jason hesitated a minute then flew into them, crying.
“Listen to me, Jason. Nothing will happen. I have those two huge men downstairs that say they’re my mates. Do you think they’re going to let the Trolls take me?” She brushed his hair out of his face and raised his chin.
“Maybe the dream was about what just happened earlier when Jack took me. I’m fine now. Roman and Garth got to me in time.” She kissed his head and tensed up.
She sensed a presence and knew the two men stood behind her. Both walked into the room and their large frames dominated Jason’s bedroom. Roman knelt next to her and Jason.
“Jason?” Roman lifted the boy’s face and gazed down at him.
“I promise you nothing will happen to your sister. I’ve called in a few of my men and they’ll be here tomorrow. They’re going to help with the problem of Jack and his friends.” Roman winked.
“You don’t understand. They won’t stop. She’s special. She’s a Chameleon,” Jason whispered and looked from Roman to Garth and finally to Sierra.
Sierra gasped. “Jason, you know that you’re not to say that around anyone.” The little room where she kept her magic contained inside her blew wide open. Magic brushed against everyone in the room. Hearing Jason’s moan next her, Sierra pulled the door closed and waited for the two men to say something. Jason squeezed her tightly. She knew he did it to calm her.
“Easy, little one. Your father already talked to us. We know how special you are.” Roman cupped her cheek, and then turned his attention again to her brother.
“We won’t stop protecting her—ever. We would die to protect her. Like your sister, we’re also different. Can I share a little secret with you?” Roman sat on the bed next to them.
Jason nodded and pulled out of his sister’s arms. He scooted closer to Roman.
Garth slid behind her and pulled her onto his lap, careful of her injuries. Sierra stiffened, but soon relaxed. She leaned against him and rested her head on his shoulder.
Roman’s words were gentle, placid. “You must keep this a secret. Only your parents and your oldest brother know. The rest of the family and the pack will find out tonight, but I will tell you and your sister now. Our mother is part Fey and is from a very powerful family. Her powers have been passed down to me and Garth,” Roman
