die.â
âSo you put him in play again after all those years?â
Phillipâs smile went steely, and Jimmy sensed a fracture in his composure. âI want whatâs best for him. I made some mistakes. Perhaps I can make amends in some small way. He must have said something to you.â
âHeâs looking for the virus, if you must know. He wants to inoculate Rix. He cares a lot more for his son than you ever cared for him.â Jimmy eyed his guest carefully, looking for a flinch of conscience, a semblance of humanity.
Phillip pursed his lips in thought, his eyes still tranquil. âGood,â he said.
Jimmy winced inwardly. What a cold piece of work. He wondered if Phillip had access to the virus. Perhaps he was Eternal himself. He looked too young to be a grandfather.
âDo you want to help us out, Jimmy? Thereâs a good margin of profit for you.â
âIâm retired.â
Phillip looked around with a critical air. âYou could do better.â
âHow much better?â
âAn exponential increase. Itâs a simple smuggling operation, just like old times.â
âIs the product legal?â
âThe product doesnât even exist.â
âBut it will?â
Phillip bowed his head with the grace of a sage. âNew nanochip architecture.â
Jimmy smiled, feeling familiarity like an old lover. âI like chips.â
âIâll leave the creative details of transport completely to your expertise.â
âNo strings?â
âOnly the purse strings, Jimmy. Just the way you like it.â
With a lump of pain in her throat, Mia stuffed her backpack with dirty clothes. âRix is fine on his own,â she said. âHe doesnât need a babysitter.â
âWe canât just leave him there all alone.â
âI know that.â
âWell, one of us should at least check on him.â
âIâd rather be with you.â
âCâmon, Mia, I just want to chase some numbers with an old friend while you get Rix ready for another relocation. Heâs not going to like the idea.â
âHow will I contact you? What if something comes up at the community? What if thereâs a purge?â
âIâll pick you up in a week, Mia. I promise. Iâll scout out a safe home and weâll make a clean break.â Zakariah peered out the window at dark thunderheads gathering beyond the hills. âYou should try to get out before the storm hits, hon.â
âYeah. Weâre not very good at saying goodbye.â
Zakariah turned with a comforting grin. âOh? I thought we did pretty good.â
Mia smiled, but her face quickly relaxed into a stern and worried mask. âI wish we had a plan.â
âJust be careful. Assume the elders are compromised. Play the secret agent. Use your chi magic and keep Rix out of trouble for one more week.â
âRix can look after himself. You know heâs the smartest kid on the planet.â
âWell, he still needs a mother. Heâs got to be clean if heâs going to get an ampoule.â
âDo you really think it makes any difference? The moral imperative?â
âI donât know. I guess so.â
âWhy is it all so secretive?
Zakariah shrugged. âEverybody wants to live forever.â
âThen why canât we just give everyone an ampoule? Mass-produce the virus?â
âToo expensive, maybe.â Zakariah shook his head. âI wish I knew.â
âNeither one of us paid a penny for Eternal life.â
Zakariah met her eyes. âThe chosen few.â He turned and looked back out the window. âDonât worry. Everythingâs going to be okay.â
Mia stepped up behind him and kissed the side of his neck. âGoodbye, lover,â she whispered.
Zakariah reached back and pulled her hips against him, but he didnât turn around. âSee you soon,â he lied.
