fine,” I murmur, and Micah asks for coffee.
“What’s good here?” I scan the breakfast menu while Beth Anne goes to get our drinks.
“Depends on what you like.” Micah doesn’t bother opening his menu. I’m guessing he eats here a lot. “I’m a steak and eggs man, myself, but the pancakes are good too.”
I settle on the pancake breakfast platter by the time our waitress returns.
“I haven’t seen you before.” Beth Anne gives me a once over while she writes down our orders.
“Alex just moved here.” Micah sips on his over-sugared coffee. The boy had dumped three packs of sugar in it. My teeth hurt just watching him.
“Everyone sure makes a fuss about me not being local.” I take a drink of my orange juice. It tastes like it’s been freshly squeezed.
“We don’t get a lot of out-of-towners.” Micah’s eyes hunt through the restaurant. Is he looking for someone?
“Really? I’d have thought with the university, you’d have a good variety of out-of-towners.”
Micah flashes me a tight smile. “You’d think, wouldn’t you? We do get a good lot from around the state, but not many from outside.”
    “That’s kinda…weird.”
“Yeah, it is.” Micah’s eyes are fixed on a table in the corner.
I look over my shoulder to see what he’s staring at so hard. The guy from last night is getting up, and I can see him better in the light of day. Dark and broody. Those are the first words that come to mind. His hair is darker than mine, glinting almost blue in the sunlight. Those eyes, though. They are the same pools of ice as last night. I shiver just thinking about it. Oddly, I see the same reaction occur in Micah. He frowns and pulls out his phone, sending a quick text.
    “Who is that?” I ask.
“I don’t know.” His voice is clipped and short. Whoever the guy is, Micah doesn’t like him. “Stay away from him, girls. I get bad vibes from that one.”
So do I, but I get another vibe from him as well, one I don’t really understand. As he passes our table, his eyes meet mine for a moment and he smiles, but it doesn’t reach his eyes.
Micah frowns as he watches him leave, but before I can say anything, our food arrives. A gasp escapes at the mountain of food piled on the table from both our orders. No way can I eat even half of mine.
Beth Anne chuckles at my reaction. “Not used to home-style portions?”
    “Who eats this much food?”
“The folks around here,” Beth Anne says, a grin sliding across her face. “You’ll get used to it.”
“Who was that guy who just left?” Micah watches the boy climb into a dark SUV.
“Luka.” She looks out the window, a frown on her face too. “He’s not much of a talker. All I could get out of him was his name and that he’s a foreign exchange student from Romania.”
They’re both acting like it’s some kind of crime to be an exchange student. Beyond weird.
“Does Aiden know?” Micah asks. “I texted him, but he’s not responding.”
“Yeah, I think Burt told him last night.”
What is going on? Why would someone need to be informed about a new person in town?
“Well, I’ll leave you two to eat. Honey doll, let me know if you need a box to take some of that with you.”
“No way I’m eating all this. My brother will get the leftovers.”
    “Your brother?” they both ask.
“Jason Reed,” I say slowly. What is wrong with these people? They get all nervous and jumpy at new people.
“Michelle’s Jason?” Beth Anne asks, surprised.
“Ah, the ex-future Mrs. Reed.” I nod.
A laugh bursts out of Micah. “What?”
“That’s what I called her last night when I met her,” I explain. “She got all territorial.”
“She can be that,” Beth Anne agrees. “Y’all holler if you need anything.”
Micah digs into one of the biggest steaks I’ve ever seen. It’s rare too. My nose scrunches. I hate to eat anything rare.
Micah’s eyes twinkle with mirth as he watches my reaction. “It’s not as gross as
