church, Boone. Any message or anything?â
Boone waved him off. âJust tell him Iâll see him soon.â
As soon as the door was shut again, Boone said, âJack, this had better be good.â
âItâs not so good, Boones.â
âTell me sheâs okay.â
âAs far as I know, sheâs all right.â
âSo spill it.â
âSheâs in Cook County Jail.â
âWhat theâ?â
Boone started to rise, but Keller put a hand on his knee. âWe have really got to keep it down, Boones; now I mean it.â He looked over his shoulder as if to be sure the door was shut and lowered his voice even more. âIâm not even sure what the charge is, but you know Iâm convinced we have a rat inside.â
âYou canât possibly suspect her.â
Jack hesitated. âTell you the truth, Iâd sooner suspect Garrett Fox.â
Garrett Fox? Booneâs onetime partner had left the force in disgrace after lying during Booneâs misconduct hearing the year before. âFox isnât even CPD anymore!â
âHe was close enough to us that he could have picked up information he shouldnât have had. That would give him the means, and we all know he had a motive to see you hurt.â
âIâm not buying that. But even if itâs true, whatâs that got to do with Haeley?â
Jack spoke deliberately. âThere are some who think she was, at the very least, careless with classified information.â
âCâmon! Iâve never seen anyone more careful.â
Jack shrugged. âApparently there was enough to get her on violating the public trust, breaching her oath of loyaltyââ
âJack, whoâs behind this? Galloway didnât have her arrested and then quit, did he?â
Keller shook his head. âYou donât want to know.â
âOf course I do!â
âIt was Pete.â
âWade? Youâve got to be kidding! Wasnât he the one who didnât want to even suspect anyone inside? Anyway, he loves Haeley!â
âThatâs what I thought. Heâs not happy about all this. In fact, I get the impression heâs really conflicted over it. But he studied everything himselfâand you know heâs always been tops as an investigatorââ
âSure, butââ
âHeâs even hoping it will come out that if she somehow inadvertently leaked information, it was a mistake and that she wonât take a real hit for it.â
âSheâs already taking a hit if sheâs in County, Jack! That pit breaks the worst gangbangers. Imagine what itâll do to an innocent, someone with no record, no history . . .â
âIf she did have anything to do with this, sheâs regretting it now.â
âWhy didnât you stop it? You know it canât be true, and youâre Peteâs boss.â
âIâd have to have cause to stand in the way of an arrest like that. Iâd have to be dead sure. . . .â
âJack, it makes no sense. Donât people know Haeley and I are seeing each other? What possible motive would she have for putting me in danger?â
âHaving a relationship with you would be a good cover.â
Boone shook his head. âWhatâs happening with Max? Tell me Child and Family Services doesnât have him.â
âYou kiddinâ? Haeley would have killed herself before she let that happen. She got some woman from her church to take him, and her mother is driving up from South Carolina to take over, today or tomorrow, I think.â
âHowâs Haeley doing? Iâve got to get over to see her.â
âNo oneâs heard from her that I know of, but I wouldnât advise that. She used her one phone call to make arrangements for her son. Far as I know, she doesnât even have a lawyer yet.â
âAnd you donât advise my getting over
