behavior to ensure Inigo’s safety. However, all they’d seen was some grousing and plenty of angst. Moses wondered if any of this was getting through to Viper, or whether his opinions were tainted by the sacrifice he’d made the day he’d entered the dark world.
“I’m almost envious,” Viper murmured, observing Melanie’s deepening scowl. “She’ll eat you alive.”
Moses snorted, grimacing as his cock crowded against the front of his trousers. His erection hadn’t let up a bit since she’d worked her magic. He tried to sway his friend one more time. “Viper, if things go south…”
“I’ll do what I have to.”
Moses tamped down his frustration. Viper was as hardheaded as they came. “There’s got to be another way. She’s not a bad person.”
Viper swung toward him. “You’re forgetting—she’s not a person at all.”
“You’ve lived too long among vamp scum, buddy. If something goes wrong, she’s not responsible.”
“If she proves dangerous, do you really think she could be happy on lockdown for the rest of her life?”
Moses rubbed his head in frustration. “Just keep in mind the fact she’s not soulless. It matters.”
Viper sat on the edge of the console table, his arms folded over his chest. “Tell me, Moses. Just how much do you like this girl? Or is it just about the sex?”
Anger burned through him, but he’d been around the block a time or two and understood why Viper was so worried. He’d cut him some slack. But only so much. “Oh, I like the sex. A whole damn lot. But there’s more to her. She’s…surprising. Funny. Tiny. Fierce.” He aimed a steady glare at Viper. “A lot like your Mariah.”
Viper shot up from the console and turned away. “Don’t go there,” he said quietly.
Moses knew he’d rubbed salt into an old wound, but mentioning Viper’s wife was the only way he could get him to understand where he was coming from. “You’d move heaven and earth to keep her safe. You gave her up to make sure she didn’t come inside anyone’s radar.”
“I gave her up to keep her safe from me .” Viper’s lips twisted into a parody of a smile.
“Don’t gimme that.” His hands fisted at his sides. “You wouldn’t harm a hair on her head. You never gave yourself over to your inner beast. And you’re still talkin’ to me. Does that mean you don’t give a shit what happens to me?”
    “You can handle it.”
Moses grunted. “Exactly. I’ll handle Melanie. And whatever it is that I feel for her, well, it’s my own damn business.”
Viper held up his hands. “Whatever. I’m through trying to talk sense to you. Meantime, your balls have to be blue.”
Moses wrinkled his nose. “They’re too damn black to be blue.”
Viper laughed. “All right, you better get in there. But I’m not gonna shut off the monitor to save you embarrassment.”
“Who’s gonna be embarrassed?” Moses asked with a smirk. “You can even take notes.” He was still chuckling as he approached Melanie’s bedroom door. He leaned close and heard muffled muttering inside. She was in a snit.
Without knocking, he quietly unlocked the bolt and opened the door.
Melanie stood in the center of the room, legs spaced apart, hands braced on her hips.
    He cleared his throat.
With a slow move, her head turned and she aimed a deadly glance over her shoulder. “I don’t like that I don’t have any control over this.”
He tsked and shook his head. “Baby, you’ve got all the control.”
    “But I don’t want it.”
The winsome note in her voice made him want to wrap her in his arms. But that would be a mistake. Between his hard-on and the way she trembled like she was barely holding herself together, they’d light up like gunpowder when they touched. “I’ve got an idea.”
“You can think?” Her gaze trailed down to the front of his pants where he knew she could see an impressive bulge.
“Not all guys lose their minds when they’re horny.” Only he had. When
