did!â Finlay pulled the letter out of his pocket. âCos if you said no we might just have to show this to your mum and Maxâs mum. Right, Max?â
Max grinned and nodded. âYep, thatâs right.â He looked at Zoë. âLittle snuggly squoogles ⦠â
Zoë gasped and her face turned as red as a tomato. âYou went through my bag! You ⦠you â¦â
âWhatâs it to be?â Finlay interrupted. âWe get to use your bag for today âyou can have it and the letter back this evening â or we show the letter now?â
Zoë glanced round to where Michelle and the two mums were about to go into the maze. âOh, OK, then,â she said through gritted teeth. âYou keep the bag, but I want it back by this evening.â
âDeal,â Max said quickly.
âAnd donât do anything gross with it!â she added.
âItâs OK,â said Fin, grinning. âWe only want it to keep some dead bird skins safe.â
âHa, ha, you are just
so
funny, Finlay.â Zoë gave them a furious look and then turned and stomped off.
Maxâs mum stopped by the maze entrance. âAre you coming in as well, boys?â
Max and Finlay shook their heads firmly.
âIâve had enough of mazes for one day,â Max muttered to Finlay.
âIâve got my pocket money with me,â Finlay said. âLetâs go and get an ice cream!â
CHAPTER NINE
BACK TO THE CASTLE
After lunch, Auntie Carol drove them all home. To Maxâs relief, his mum said he and Finlay could go up to the castle.
They raced up the path. As they ran over the bridge there was a loud bang and the bag suddenly got lighter on Maxâs back. He opened the top. âThe skins have gone!â he exclaimed.
They hurried in through thegatehouse. Juno was standing in the middle of the keep. She looked furious. âYou have completed the task!â
The boys stopped warily by the gatehouse wall. âYes,â Max said.
âBah!â Juno spat.
Max felt a warm swirling sensation in his chest and a flood of golden light burst out of him. He felt dizzy. The superpower had gone! It streamed across the keep and hit the inner wall of the tower opposite.
Almost immediately the bricks crumbled. The boys saw Hercules look out.
âYou did it!â Hercules exclaimed triumphantly. âMy superpower has returned to me!â
They raced over to him. His face waslooking less lined and his eyes glowed golden. âYou killed the Stymphalian Birds and brought back their skins!â he said. âHow did you do it?â
âIt wasnât easy,â Max said, shivering at the memory. âWe had to use an axe and a disc and hide in a maze â¦â He and Finlay quickly told Hercules what theyâd done.
Hercules smiled from one to the
other. âYou used all your strengths. You worked as a team, battling side by side, trusting each other. You did very well.â
âThose birds were mean!â Finlay said. âIt was the hardest task yet.â
Juno strode towards them, her eyes flashing fire. âYou will not be saying that tomorrow! In the morning, you must fetch me the three golden apples of the gods. It is a task that requires great courage and wisdom. You must solve a riddle to help you steal the apples. Make one mistake and â¦â she looked from one to the other, âa fate
worse
than death awaits.â
âWe wonât make a mistake!â Finlay told her.
âNo,â Max said, moving so they were standing side by side. âWeâre going toget Hercules another of his superpowers back.â
âI doubt it very much,â Juno sneered.
âYou have been wrong evey day so far, Juno,â Hercules said in his deep voice.
âSilence!â Juno clapped her hands and the stones closed over his face. She looked at the boys. âI hope you like dogs!â
Laughing evilly she
