forehead fell against his shoulder, and she attempted to catch her breath and to clear the cobwebs clouding her mind. "I've never wanted anyone so badly, Ryker," she whispered, not sure if she'd even said the words out loud. “I’ve wanted this for so long.”
"Are you okay?" He released her hands and pulled her into his arms.
Slipping her arms around his waist she nodded, basking in the feel of his body pressed tight against hers.
"We can't do this, Chloe," he whispered, stroking her hair as he continued to hold her tight.
Frowning, she pulled back to look him in the eye. "But, why? We're not really brother and sister. Just by marriage. Why not?"
“I don’t care about our parents being married, that’s not what I’m concerned about.” Sadness mixed with the hunger in his eyes. Ryker touched her cheek, running his thumb along her lower lip. "Because I love you too much to ruin what we have. If things didn't work out..." He shook his head. "Sex has a way of ruining things."
For him maybe. She thought back and couldn’t name a single girl he’d been in a long-term relationship with. He never let women get close enough to him for there to be anything to ruin when they broke up.
"But what if it works out?’ she protested. “We won't know until we try." How could she have him and then lose him all within a few minutes?
"Chloe, listen, I'm not willing to take that chance. I shouldn't have let things go as far as they just did. It's just... I got caught up in the moment." He grimaced. "God, I've wanted you for so long." He sighed. “I’m sorry, Chloe. This can’t happen.”
    "Ryker, please. But, I –"
"I'm sorry, Chloe. We're better off just forgetting this ever happened."
Chloe's heart sank. Forgetting what happened between them was the last thing she wanted to do.

Chapter 4

    Ryker – One Week Later
"Wow, haven't seen you here for a while, man. What's going on?"
Ryker sighed, raking a hand through his hair as he sat down on a barstool by his patrol partner and senior officer, Adam Forgrave. "It's just… Fuck. It’s complicated."
"What can I get for you?" Ryker looked up to see the bartender leaning over the counter waiting to take his order.
He was about to order a beer when he realized that perhaps going home drunk wasn't the best idea. He knew Chloe wasn’t going to give up, she was hardly a quitter when it came to something she wanted, especially since she now knew his secret: that he wanted her as much as she wanted him. He’d tried so damned hard to keep his attraction toward her a secret over the years, because he didn’t want her to think there was a reason to keep fighting for his affection. He’d hoped she’d lose interest in him, but she hadn’t, and neither did he in her. It was a fucked-up mess that was already causing a strain between them. In the couple of brief instances that they’d been in the same room together over the past week, the tension was so thick it was suffocating. She looked so damned sad that it was like a knife being jabbed into his gut each time he was near her. "Just a glass of ice water."
"Better slow down partner, don't want to have me carry you out of here," his partner joked, taking a swig from his bottle of beer.
"Well, someone has to be sober enough to drive your drunk ass home, Forgrave."
Adam huffed. "Nah… Don't worry about me, man." He swivelled around on his stool and began to scan the crowd in the bar. "I plan on going home with one of these hot pieces of ass tonight."
"Water on the house." The bartender passed the glass of water to Ryker and immediately focused his attention on the next patron.
Ryker had been avoiding home and Chloe for close to a week, ever since the day he finger fucked her, getting up before her and going to work early and coming home late. His mind kept running back to how responsive her body was to his touch and how wet she'd been for him. How much she wanted him. It was driving him insane and he had an
