yet. Theyâre calling it âThe Miracle in the Projects.ââ
âOh, fuck me. Zombies?â
âYeah. Maybe a hundred.â
âJesus Christ. Whatâs happening there now?â I heard Adan take a deep breath. âWeâre losing it, Domino. I think we maybe lost it already. Theyâre taking them to the hospitals. Thereâs not much we can do about it.â
âWhatâs Mobley doing?â
âCommunity service. Heâs got his posses out there helping with the relief effort. But you can forget about getting him to sit down with Terrence. There wonât be any sit-down, not after this.â
âStupid fucking Wale,â I said, and slammed the receiver against my skull a few times.
âWhat are we going to do, Domino?â
I really had no idea but I had to think of one, fast. âIt sounds like containment isnât an option. Weâve got to start thinking about a cleanup. Iâm not as worried about the projects, but weâre going to have to put soldiers in the hospitals.â
Adan laughed and there was an ugly edge to it. âThatâs it? You want to send death squads to the hospitals? Domino, itâs on the news!â
âOkay, not our soldiers. Weâll handle the projectsâwe wonât attract much attention there. We can send the fey to the hospitals. They can deal with the zombies and glamour the civilians. They can keep a lid on it, if anyone can.â
âThat might work, if Oberon agrees to help. Youâll be indebted to him, though.â
I didnât answer. If I played my cards right I wouldnât need Oberon for this. âWhy donât you go ahead and say it, Adan.â
âWhat?â
âI told you so. Youâre thinking it, might as well be man enough to say it.â
The line was silent for a few moments. âI wasnât thinking it, Domino. You didnât know Simeon Wale was going to do this. And the zombie problem definitely isnât your fault.â
âIt was my plan to send Wale over, and it went about as wrong as a plan can go.â
âLook, Iâm not going to pretend I agreed with your decision. I didnât, but not because I anticipated anything like this.â
âNo, you were just worried it would involve us in the conflict, that it would escalate and pull us in. You were right.â
âMaybe,â Adan said. âAnd maybe next time Iâll be the one who fucks up. The truth is, Iâve been at this, what, ten weeks? Most of the time Iâm just bluffing my way through and hoping no one notices. Neither one of us is my father, Domino. We need each other to do this thing.â
âIâll try.â
âAs will I, starting now. Iâll take care of Imperial Courts. You handle the hospitals.â
âDone,â I said. âCall me.â
âI will. Good luck.â
âYou, too. And Adan?â
âYeah?â
âThanks,â I said and hung up the phone.
Â
âHoney,â I called. Iâd thrown on some clothes and I was in the kitchen nuking a frozen snack. Honey flew in from the second bedroom she and her family had converted into the Enchanted Forest.
âMorning, Domino. Whatâs for breakfast?â
âHot Pocket,â I said, and looked at the box. âHam and Cheddar.â
âUgh. I donât see how you can eat that stuff.â
âIâm not in the mood for a burrito. Say, Honey, how do feel about killing zombies?â
Honeyâs face brightened and her wings scattered orange pixie dust. âDid you get an Xbox?â
âNo, I mean real ones.â
âOh. Iâve never killed one. I bet itâs not as fun as it is in the games.â
âProbably not, but do you think you could handle some zombies?â
âAre they really slow, like in the movies?â
âI donât know. Iâve only seen two of them. I think it depends on how long
