heard raised voices, one of them with a distinct French accent.
Throwing open the door, he found Jean Jacques and Lily toe to toe in the closet. Their cheeks were flushed and both turned toward him.
“What?” they snapped at the same time.
Lily scowled at Antonio, her hands fisted, coming to rest on her hips. “Can’t you see we’re busy here?”
Antonio was surprised. On the few occasions he’d been around her she’d portrayed the image of sweetness and light. It would appear the woman had a temper to match her fiery hair.
“Please forgive me, Lily.” He gave her a half bow. “I need to borrow your companion for a few moments.”
Her expression morphed from pissed to quite pleased. She flashed him a wide smile. “He’s all yours.”
“Thank you, Lily.”
“You will wait here,” Jean Jacques growled at her.
“I don’t think so—”
“I did not ask you to think. You will do as I say.”
Lily’s eyes widened but to Antonio’s surprise, she didn’t respond. Just what the devil was going on here? His gaze moved from Lily to Jean Jacques. He’d never seen his brother’s business partner address a woman with anything other than total respect.
Jean Jacques sent her a dark look before stalking out of the room. Antonio followed him across the hall, and he noted the other man had left the door open to keep an eye on Lily. He was bemused to see Jean Jacques was unwilling to let the mouthy redhead out of his sight.
“How can I be of assistance?” Jean Jacques spoke.
“Earlier, you came into the ballroom with a blonde woman. What is her name?”
“Caught your eye, did she?” The other man’s smile was knowing. “She is very beautiful.”
“Her name?”
“Jane Porter, she is Lily’s business partner.” His smiled faded. “She’s also a good woman. If you or Santos do anything to hurt her you will both answer to me.”
“I can assure you, I’ve never mistreated a lady—”
“Giselle has been telling a different story.”
“She has?” Antonio had a sinking feeling this wasn’t going to be good.
“She’s telling everyone who will listen about how badly you treated her.”
“Consider the source.” Antonio snorted. “The only time I treated her with anything less than courtesy was when she broke into my apartment and I found her naked in my bed. I grabbed her clothing and shoved her into a cab while she screamed her head off.”
“She says you cheated on her.”
Antonio laughed. “She’s a gold-digging liar with a vivid imagination.”
“So it would seem.” Jean Jacques’ gaze was direct. “I have to admit her story didn’t sound anything like the man I know you to be.”
“We’ve known each other too long for me to lie to you.” Antonio shook his head, truly sorry for Giselle. “I expected nothing more from her. She is a dangerous woman and a cunning liar. Because I am Spanish and I have money, people automatically assume I am some Lothario—”
“The women do at least.”
Both men laughed.
“Take care with Jane.” The other man nodded toward the closet where Lily stood still glowering at both of them. “As you can see, I have my hands full with this one.”
Antonio leaned in and spoke in a low voice. “It’s just my opinion, but if you were a smart man, you’d keep her lovely mouth busy with something else.”
Jean Jacques gave a conspiratorial smile. “Trust me, my friend, I have every intention of doing just that.”
Antonio walked away with a huge grin. It just might be that the boisterous Lily had met her match.
Chapter Five
Lily was very angry with him.
She stood where he’d left her, impatience written across every inch of her delicious body. When she saw him walking toward her, she relaxed against the counter and began inspecting her flawless fingernails as if she didn’t have a care in the world.
Antonio was right, it was past time to claim this woman and show her who wore the pants in their sexually charged
