are
thrown into a much lower economic bracket, while the man’s financial situation improves considerably. So
don’t give me any sob stories about what the divorce cost you. This car alone would make a liar out of
you.“
„You seem to have become quite an expert on divorce since I last saw you,“ Flynn muttered grimly.
„Ummra. I’ve discovered it’s a necessity for a single woman of my age,“ Heather agreed quite brightly.
„After a woman turns thirty she makes the rather horrifying discovery that all the good men in her age
group are married or gay. It seems like the only available males left are either married and looking for an
affair, or divorced and looking for an affair. It’s a tough world out there for the single woman in her thirties
these days.“
„I see. The fact that you’re involved with Lee Osborne means you’ve opted to stick with the divorced
crowd?“
Heather heard the rough, possessive jealousy behind the words and wondered at it. „Lee and I are just
friends,“ she found herself saying almost placatingly. It irritated her that she even bothered to try to soothe
him. She owed Flynn exactly nothing, Heather reminded herself.
„What kind of a future is Osborne offering? What exactly does friendship entail these days?“
„Not much,“ Heather said, deliberately keeping her words as light as possible. She didn’t like the dark in
tensity that was creeping into the conversation.
„I’m offering a hell of a lot more than friendship, Heather. And I’m also offering more than an affair.“
„Please, Flynn. You’re ruining my appetite. Look, is that the taco joint you had in mind?“
He glared at the neon sign looming up on the right-hand side of the street. „Yeah, that’s it. But, Heather,
I’m trying to explain something to you. Will you please listen?“
„No. I figure that may have been my major problem eight months ago. I did too much listening. You
always had a way with words. There’s a parking space over there to the left of the entrance.“
„I see it,“ Flynn growled.
The small restaurant was crowded and noisy. Flynn had obviously not expected either the people or the
loud chatter going on around the small table where he and Heather were seated. They had to raise their
voices in order to give the waitress their orders for tacos, tamales and two bottles of Mexican beer. When
the beer and two glasses arrived Flynn took a long swallow and leaned forward in an effort to make himself
heard.
„Why Talon and Associates?“
„What?“ Heather leaned back in her chair, more or less defeating Flynn’s attempt to create a measure
of conversational intimacy. She savored her beer and waited for him to repeat the question. It bought her a
few seconds in which to analyze it.
„You heard me. I said, why did you go to Talon and Associates?“ Flynn’s expression was hooded as he
sat leaning forward with his big hands wrapped around the glass. „You must have known they’re
Con-Struct’s major rivals in town.“
„The fact didn’t escape me,“ Heather admitted with a small smile.
Flynn’s expression darkened further. „Take anything useful with you?“
Heather was grinning now. „It would have been easy, wouldn’t it? People tend to forget just how much
company proprietary information the manager of a central filing operation has access to in the course of her
work. Con-Struct’s filing system is all computerized and I was in charge of search and retrieval on the
computers. Yes, indeed. It would have been a snap to take all sorts of interesting documents with me.“
„Did you?“
Heather’s grin faded. She took another swallow of her beer. „What do you think?“
Flynn studied her for a long moment and then sat back slowly in his chair. Heather almost didn’t hear
him when he finally spoke. „I don’t think you bought your way into the Talon job with any Con-Struct pro-
prietary materials. You’re not the type.“
Oddly
