my purse. “Let’s go in the house., I’m sure my brothers have made breakfast and coffee.” I can see a smile turn up a little on his face and he pulls the keys from the ignition of Layla’s car.
Of course , the only thing that Marko owns is a bike and I was not about to ride nine hours on the back of a motorcycle. I like feeling my ass and legs, thank you very much! It was still a very quiet ride in Layla’s car. He doesn’t seem to talk much and I tried to ask questions, but he kept very much to himself.
“So, do you think we ’ll find your uncle?” I ask as I start to walk toward the house.
“Yeah, we will . He couldn’t have gone far; we have a few people looking into things for us.” Just as he says it, his phone rings.
“Speak.” I stop walking so that I can pay attention . “Are you fucking kidding me? Well, who could have done that?” He pauses. “Who the hell could have come up with that type of cheddar? Yeah, I think it’s worth me taking a ride down there.” He stops for a second to listen to the person on the other end. “I’m here dropping off his ol’ lady. Gonna grab a few hours of shut eye and then I’ll ride out.” Another pause; this time he turns and looks at me. “I’ll let her know, but she’s here to help settle her father’s estate.” He hangs up and then continues walking like none of that just happened.
“Um, hello? Do you mind explaining what the fuck that was about?” He doesn’t turn around ; he just continues walking toward the house. “Marko, damn it. Stop and talk to me. My family doesn’t know about this bullshit. So, please fill me in.”
He finally stops . As I watch him slowly turn around and take a deep breath, I realize I don’t know if I really want to hear this. It could be something bad about Ryder. How did you get in this situation? You idiot. You fell in love with a damn biker.
He steps forward a little and drops his head. “Ryder was arrested with a large amount of drugs in his rig. He was in federal holding until someone posted bail. It was five million dollars. The only people that we know capable of something like that are the Russians. It was their product, so if they thought that Ryder would rat or anything, they would have gotten him out just to keep him from talking.” He looks at me sadly. “Prez is worried that the Russians will come after you and my mom.”
I shake my head and begin to realize just how fucked up shit is. “Why the hell would they want me? I’m just a simple farm girl; Ryder and I are not really that serious.” I don’t want to say anything about Ryder asking me to marry him, because I don’t know if he wants everyone to know. I run my fingers over the ring Ryder gave me before he left on this godforsaken ‘quick’ last run. Quick, my ass. I knew something was going to happen; I just didn’t want to admit it to myself.
“He thinks if they have Ryder , they’ll take you as leverage. You’re his ol’ lady; that’s a big thing in this world.” He huffs and walks up the stairs. “Well, are we gonna go in or what? I’m tired.”
Marko is a very moody young man, he is hot and cold so hard to tell how he is feeling half the time I have come to realize. Working with him, I never noticed much. Most likely because I thought he was a normal person, but I guess silly me for judging a book by its cover, huh? “Yeah, let’s go get something to eat and some sleep.”
Walking in the front door, we’re hit with the smell of fresh coffee and biscuits. “Guys, are you here?” I call out while I set my bag on the floor and slip my shoes off. “You’re gonna have to remove your boots,” I tell Marko. “House rules.” I shrug my shoulders; if he wants to be an asshole I can be a bitch.
Continuing to walk towards the kitchen and I catch the landing of the stairs out of the corner of my eye and I get a flash of Ryder in my head and have to shake the feeling that something is wrong. There is nothing you can
