Charlie.
âI protested to the controller. Said there must have been a circulation error, in giving me such inferior communication.â
âWasnât that putting yourself at risk?â
âWhen I made the protest I thought it was a mistake: it was not until I was told it was intended for me that I realized the suspicion.â
âSo from 19th August on, everything was low level?â
âThe lowest.â
âTell me now about the assassination cables.â
âThere were three.â
âWhat was the first: the exact words?â
âThe need is understood that a political, public example has to be set, for the maximum impact,â quoted Novikov.
âJust that?â
âJust that.â
âDespatched or received?â
âDespatched.â
âTo whom?â
âThe Politburo: thatâs how I came to encode. I was cleared that high.â
âAnd that was the first?â
âYes.â
âThe word assassination is not there: so how did you know it involved killing?â
âThe message came from Department 8 of Directorate S.â
âWhich is also responsible for sabotage and abduction.â
âYouâre very knowledgeable.â
âItâs not my knowledge weâre questioning.â
âThere was a marker designation, on the cable.â
âWhatâs a marker designation?â
âItâs like a subject reference.â
âWhat was it?â
â Mokrie ,â said the Russian.
â Mokrie dela ,â completed Charlie. âDo they still refer to assassinations as âwet affairsâ?â
âItâs a bureaucratic institution, with long time rules,â said the Russian.
âArenât they all?â said Charlie. âWere there any other types of reference?â
âThe word âpurpleâ,â said Novikov.
âWhat does that identify?â asked Charlie, who knew.
âThe Politburo,â replied the Russian.
âI would have expected something else,â said Charlie.
Novikov smiled. âRun Around,â he said.
âNumbered?â
Now a nod of admiration accompanied the smile. âFour,â the Russian agreed.
âWho handled the first three?â
âI donât know,â apologized Novikov. âThere were five others in the department with clearance that matched mine.â
âAnd you could not have asked them,â said Charlie, a comment more than a question.
âAny discussion of messages sent or received is absolutely forbidden,â confirmed Novikov. âSuspension and investigation would be automatic.â
Charlie nodded and said: âTell me about the second.â
âIt said, âYou will despatch the catalogue,ââ quoted Novikov, again.â
âThe same references?â
âOne addition. The number seventeen.â
âWhat did that signify?â
âThe destination of the cable: the rezidentura in London.â
âWhat about the other number?â
âFive.â
âSo you were handling the messages in sequence now,â said Charlie, excited at the disclosure but not showing it.
âAnd I transmitted the cable numbered six, the last one,â confirmed Novikov once more.
Excellent, thought Charlie. âTo where?â
âLondon again.â
âWhat did it say?â
ââYou will wrap the November catalogueâ.â
Charlie decided there had been sufficient intensity and that Novikov needed a respite if he were not to become exhausted. He smiled and said: âWonder if we can get a drink around here?â
âI enjoy very much your Scotch whisky,â said Novikov.
âSo do I,â said Charlie.
The man who answered the bell summons was stiffly upright, giving away the previous army service from which all the support staff at safe houses were recruited. He was someone Charlie had not encountered before but immediately
