Jason. Iâve come to see Andrew.â
The man waved Jason into the hallway and closed the door. âAndrew, you have a visitor,â the old man shouted in Chinese.
âWho is it?â Andrewâs voice shouted back in Chinese from upstairs. The old man had gone into the kitchen and didnât reply. Andrew, wearing just his white school shirt and underwear, appeared and looked down the stairs.
âOh, itâs you, Jason. Well, youâd better come up.â
âYou donât seem too pleased to see me. Is everything all right?â Jason questioned as he ran up the stairs.
âYeah,â Andrew assured him, performing a slow-motion high kick toward Jason.
âYou did say I could come by and you would get me a job with your father when we got out.â
âDid he now?â Lin Cho said behind Jason. Jason was taken by surprise. He turned to see Cho right behind him, his arms folded. He was wearing a black suit and tie that looked too small for his slightly overweight figure.
âAndrew, where is your honor? You have a guest. Put some clothing on,â he ordered.
âItâs only Jason, Father. We shared a cell. Heâs seen a lot more than this. Heâs the boy I told you about. He could be of some use.â
âYouâre a little on the small side, but Andrew speaks highly of you. A Western boy as a lookout could be useful.â
âWhatâs my size got to do with it? I can take anyone you or Andrew can,â Jason said firmly.
âAndrew is a black belt and a great fighter. I myself am a black belt second dan. I doubt that you could match us.â
Jason bit his lip. He had over six years of karate and judo training. At age five, he had competed against boys who were ten and older, and they all had been twice his weight and size. Now, he could fight an adult opponent as easily as anyone else.
How many more times have I got to prove myself?
Jason followed Andrew into his room. It had âwelcome homeâ cards stuck on one wall and posters of Bruce Lee on the others, which was very similar to Jasonâs own room back home.
âI want you to come with me Saturday, Jason. I have some unfinished business,â Andrew said, passing Jason a can of Coke.
âWhat sort of business?â
âThereâs a small store just off the high street. The owner refused to pay me. He was the guy I was beating up when the police showed up. Iâm positive he called them in advance. Father has not collected anything since. Heâs left it for me to deal with.â
âSo he owes your father quite a bit of back money?â Jason quizzed.
âNo, itâs not money anymore. He has blown that chance. This is personal. If I am to be number two in my fatherâs organization, I will need to get respect. I have to make an example of him. Weâre going to kill him,â he said coldly.
Jason took a long drink from his can, trying to think of something to say. He had to go along with it, but he could not be part of murder.
âIâve got to go. These new foster parents gave me a curfew.â
âThe Bristows. Iâll drive you,â Andrew said and jumped off the bed and pulled on his shoes.
âHow did you know their name?â Jason gasped.
âJason, my father is deputy mountain master of the Triads. Have you heard of the Wo Shing Wo? Thatâs our Triad name. He is one step away from Boudica. Boudica is dragon leader. We have to be careful who we allow in. Weâve checked you out. Itâs just a precaution.â
âDid I pass the test when you checked me out?â
âYouâre still breathing, arenât you?â
Chapter 7
Jason had arranged to meet Scott the following night at the park. It was planned for every third day at the same time. After he found out that the Triads had checked him out, he was concerned for Scottâs safety. He was also concerned for the Bristowsâ safety. It may
