embarrassed and humiliated.”
“I like where this is going, and I’m with you all the way, babe. What do you want us to do?” Vic asked, with a devilish grin.
“Well, that’s where I need your help. I have an idea, but I’m ready to hear anything you two might think of. Let’s put our heads together and come up with a kick ass plan. Before we go on, here’s something else that’s weird. I got up the nerve to call Jack’s ex-wife, and I asked her if we could talk. She agreed, so I’m going to meet her tomorrow. Get this, she doesn’t even live in Manhattan like Jack the liar said all along. Karen lives in friggin Greenwich!” Mia poured another round of wine and waited for a response.
“Friggin Greenwich, Connecticut?” Tina squealed. Wine shot out of her nose as she choked.
“The very one,” Mia smirked, as she handed Tina a napkin.
“OM double G! What a lying sack of shit. You need to learn everything you can from the ex-wife. Then we need to find out more about this Sasha chick. She obviously has no idea Jack is married. I mean, if we got her on board with us, she might let us photograph them as long as her face is hidden. All we need is Jack’s face in pictures of him being the unfaithful sleaze he is. Or we could torment him by leaving anonymous messages on his cell phone, saying we know what he’s up to. Maybe, you could just clear out the bank accounts and put the money somewhere else. There’s all kinds of ideas I’m coming up with now. I think I’m on a roll,” Vic said, laughing about the situation.
“It would be sad and painful if I loved Jack anymore. I guess I’ve known for some time that our relationship wasn’t meant to be. It was a mistake from the beginning.”
“You’ve got that right,” Vic agreed.
Chapter Five
Mia was a wreck thinking about the meeting she would have with Karen today. She didn’t know what to expect. Karen was an enigma, a mystery person in Mia’s mind. Jack never described her. He said they grew apart after seven years of marriage. They divorced a year before he met Mia. As far as Mia knew, Karen lived in Manhattan all this time. Mia needed clarification since it was beginning to seem like her entire marriage was a lie. Little by little, she realized she never knew the real Jack at all.
“Damn, I wish I was a smoker right now. I’m so friggin nervous, a cigarette would calm me down. A glass of wine may have helped too.”
Since the drive was only a half hour long, there wasn’t much time for Mia to quiet her nerves. She pulled up to the address she wrote down yesterday. A beautiful, quaint, Cape Cod styled house with dark green shutters stood in front of her. A boulevard was nestled in the center of the street with every imaginable flower planted and blooming.
Well, at least we like the same kind of houses. This isn’t what I was expecting, but what do I know? I pictured her living in a high rise in Manhattan. So far, so good. Mia parked the car and got out. She made her way up the sidewalk of red brick pavers and took a deep breath before ringing the doorbell.
The woman who answered the door looked much different than what Mia imagined in her mind. Karen appeared to be in her mid-thirties, with beautiful, shoulder length auburn hair and doe-like brown eyes. She wore very little makeup, but she didn’t seem to need it. She had a natural beauty. Damn you, Mia thought, as she sized her up. Karen was slim and petite, not at all like Mia, who was tall and athletic.
“Hello, you must be Mia. Come in.”
“Thank you, Karen. I won’t take up too much of your time, I promise. There’s a few concerns and questions I’m hoping you’ll be able to help me understand.”
“That’s kind of funny, coming from you.”
“I’m sorry, I don’t understand what that means.”
“Why don’t you sit down and tell me what you want, and why you’re here. Would you like a glass of water or something?”
“Okay… thanks.” Mia’s hands were
