seem kind of upset, though. Implied he had a lot of problems. Now that I think of it, he was pretty jumpy the whole time I was there. Looking around the room, checking his watch. His cell phone rang several times, but he only answered it that once, when the bearded guy called from the other side of the room.â
âClem.â
I nodded.
âWhatâd you talk about?â asked Horowitz. âAny hints about what was bothering him?â
âNo, nothing like that. We talked about the old days. I hadnât seen him in about ten years.â
âYou were with him how long?â
âHour, maybe an hour and a half. Then he had to go to some committee meeting.â
âDid he talk about his wife?â
âHis ex-wife, you mean?â
He nodded. âYour client.â
âNo,â I said.
âAnd if he did, you wouldnât tell me.â
I shrugged. âSheâs my client.â
âWell,â Horowitz said, âweâll check out his phone, see if we can catch up with those two you mentioned. The kid in the hoodie and Clem with the beard. You got anybody else we should check out?â
âThatâs all I can think of,â I said. âJust those two. Look. What are you planning to do about my client?â
âQuestion her, of course.â
âWhen?â
âTonight. Soon. Okay?â
âPlease,â I said. âItâs getting late. Sheâs had a very traumatic experience.â
âShe gonna be cooperative?â
âI donât see why not,â I said.
I went back over and sat on the folding chair beside Sharon.
She said, âIs everything all right?â
âIn your conversations with Ken,â I said, âdid he ever mention ketamine?â
She frowned. âKetamine?â
âItâs a recreational drug,â I said. âVets use it as an anesthetic for animal surgery.â
âI remember now,â she said. âItâs been a while since I worked in a vetâs office. What about ketamine?â
I shrugged. âThere was a bag of it in his room.â
âWhat do they think,â she said, âthat he was selling it or something?â
âIt kinda looks like it. Or else he was using it himself.â
She shook her head. âThat just shows how much I didnât know him anymore.â
âDoes the name Clem ring a bell?â
She frowned and shook her head. âShould it?â
âA guy Ken talked with when I was there, thatâs all. No reason youâd know him.â
She tilted her head. âSo now what happens?â
âTheyâre going to want to question you,â I said. âWe donât have time to go over all the things they might ask you. Theyâll want to know everything you can tell them about Ken. About his business, his finances, his personal life. His friends and enemies. You should just answer their questions as well as you can. Tell them the truth. If they ask you something you think is out of line in any way, consult with me. Iâll be there with you, and if I donât like a question, Iâll tell you not to answer until we talk about it. Okay?â
âI donât really know much about him,â she said. âWeâve been apart for over ten years. Just what he mightâve mentioned on the telephone.â
ââI donât know,ââ I said, âis a perfectly valid answer. Donât hesitate to use it.â
âThey think I did it, donât they?â she said.
âTheyâll ask you a lot of questions about yourself,â I said, âtreat you like a suspect, sure. Donât take it personally. Itâs how they think. They consider everybody a suspect until they can eliminate them.â
âEspecially the spouse. Or the ex-spouse.â
âYes,â I said. âEspecially the spouse.â
Sharon shook her head. âI was falling in love with him all over
