one. He loved his life as a rancher and took negative comments about it personally. âI think you made that perfectly clear when you took the deal with Macho. â
âYou noticed that.â
âEverybody noticed that.â And that was the other big reason heâd better get his mind off the lovely body of Keely Branscom. Heâd never been the kind of guy who could have sex for the hell of it. With him, a physical relationship with a woman needed to be going somewhere. With Keely, it could go nowhere. She didnât want what he could offer.
âNoahâ¦about that centerfoldâ¦â She sounded hesitant, which was unusual for her.
Surprised at the sudden shift in her manner, he glanced over at her.
She cleared her throat. âIt was my ticket out.â Her gaze slipped up to his face, but her expression was disguised by her dark glasses. âCan you understand that?â
âSort of.â Frustrated by not being able to see her eyes, he faced forward again. âI mean, if you wanted to get out of Saguaro Junction, posing for that magazine sure worked like a charm. And I can see why the town might seem too conservative for you. But to cut yourself off completelyâ¦â
âIt was easier that way.â
âMaybe, but growing up there wasnât all bad, was it?â
âNo, of course not.â
âDonât you ever miss the place?â He decided not to talk about missing the people for now.
She didnât answer for a long while. âSometimes,â she murmured at last. âYeah, sometimes I do.â
She was full of surprises. He didnât think sheâd admit to that so soon. Maybe he had a chance, after all. âThen why not come back and mend some fences?â
âI donât fit in there, Noah. Iâm too much like my mother.â
He barely remembered Keelyâs mother, whoâd died from complications surrounding B.J.âs birth. But Arch had said his wife had loved the excitement of the city and had been bored by country living. âI didnât mean you had to move back. But would it kill you to visit?â
âMaybe.â She smiled wistfully. âAlthough I have to say, this business of my little sister getting married has me thinking. You never did mention when the wedding was.â
âLetâs see. Itâsâ¦two weeks from Saturday,â he said with some shock. âI didnât realize it was getting so close, myself. And I still donât have a gift bought, either.â
âThat soon? Are you sure this isnât a shotgun affair?â
âAbsolutely sure. Jonas is the one who is pushing to tie the knot.â
âIâm amazed.â Keely shook her head. âB.J. must have really changed.â
âNot a whole lot. Sheâs still a better ranch hand than most men. Better at some things than Jonas, to be honest.â
âThen I donât get it. Sheâs so not his type. He likes girlie girls, and B.J. is about as far from that as you can get.â
âMaybe your sister has hidden depths.â
âMaybe she does.â
âOne thingâs for sureâJonas thinks sheâs fascinating. And B.J.âs still the same riding, roping gal as always, but there is something sort of different about her. Itâs like sheâs in full bloom or something.â
âSee? Sheâs pregnant!â
âNo, sheâs not, but I can see you arenât going to take my word for it.â He paused. âGuess youâll have to ask her yourself.â
After a long moment, Keely sighed. âI understand what youâre trying to do, Noah, and itâs very sweet, butâ¦too much waterâs gone over the dam, or under the bridge. At any rate, thereâs been a heck of a lot of water running. I donât think Iâd be a welcome guest at the wedding.â
âI wouldnât be so sure.â Noah was taking a chance saying that. But
