had heard that too many times. But I was intrigued to hear of how Hayden had been all these years. We were friends once. We has once been close. And I didn’t have many people in my life that I considered to be a friend.
“Fine, but only a few. I can’t drink like I used to,” I laughed, packing my things.
“Ha! You never could drink,” Hayden laughed in response as I pushed him aside to walk out the door.

The bar wasn’t the worst I had been in, but it was certainly different to what I was now used to. I eyed the bowl of peanuts, knowing that nothing good could come from eating those mixed nuts. But Hayden dived in anyway as we sat on our leather booth across from one another, both with a beer in hand. It had been so long since I had drunk the stuff, and now I remembered why I stopped drinking it after university.
“I can’t believe your sister has had two kids. Argh, I remember little Megan. She was always so hot and…” I cut Hayden off, raising my finger to him. “Ahh right, the ‘no-sister’ code again. I thought after all these years you would let that go.”
“I thought after all these years you might have changed,” I said with a smile.
“I have. I just kind of suck still when it comes to women. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I have been trying to settle down for a while now. It’s just hard. As clichéd as it sounds, I just haven’t really found that one woman who strikes me.”
“With an attitude like yours, you have probably had sex with several ‘true loves’ but palmed them off, not even realising it,” I said, taking another swig of the vile beer and looking up at the footy that was playing on the television. “So, you’re a sports manager now?”
“Yea, I know, who would have thought I was going places, right?” he said with an undercurrent of self-doubt. “I didn’t leave far from Ithaca after we all split and left behind the uni days. In fact, that is where my office is based, although I do a lot of travelling. I only have a small team there. My accountant, Gregory, and personal assistant, Amber.”
    “Amber?”
“Hey, don’t mock her because of her name, she has a fiery temper. And I know what you are thinking: how on earth did I get a female personal assistant without trying it on,” he said, bemused. I raised an eyebrow to egg him on before he gave a defeated expression. “I thought she was playing hard to get for a while. I only found out a few weeks ago that she is lesbian. Like gay gay, wouldn’t-even-turn-straight-for-me sort of gay.”
“Wow shocking, wouldn’t even turn for you. That must be so hard on you,” I teased. He smiled as he took another swig.
“You know you two would get along really well. You are very similar. She grabs my balls just as hard as you do. She was the one who persuaded me it would be in my best interest to be the sports columnist for Be True . She said it would be extra exposure for Zilch Enterprises. She looks after me. They both do. I really wouldn’t have gotten as far as I have without them. And so now I have the money, flash car, a nice apartment, some awesome big-named players I represent and invites to some amazing events and yet, I still feel like there is something missing… a serious relationship, maybe. I’m still waiting for life to begin.” There was a silence as he reflected on that. He called for another two beers as we both finished our third. “And what about you? You and the Brogardt kid, ey?”
“He is far from a child,” I defended him quickly. “I love him very much. I honestly couldn’t imagine myself with anyone else.”
“Wow, you have fallen hard. I remember the days when you couldn’t stay entertained with one guy for a few weeks, let alone a few months.”
“Yea and I was exactly like that a year ago. There is just something about him. He just pushes me and challenges me in every way. It’s what I need most, so it makes him my perfect partner. I suppose, or something like that,” I
