again.” She had met Tim on two other occasions. He was Bethany’s safe bet. Beth had been absolutely in love with another guy, Joey, all of college. But Joey could not be faithful to her. If it wore a skirt, Joey would be after it. Then she met Tim, who worshipped her from day one. “This is my date, Brian. I think you may remember him, Beth.” Bethany knew all about Brian. He had been to their dorm room, then the house they rented together in college numerous times. Too many times to count. Not to mention the many trips she and Beth took to Ohio State to hang with Brian and his friends in Columbus. Beth used to always tell Jeni that her and Brian were so loud and “raunchy” when they had sex that Beth blushed even being in another room, because she could hear them so clearly.
“Of course, I remember Brian,” Bethany said, raising her “what are you doing” eyebrow at Jeni. Bethany knew about her relationship with Stephen from the numerous phone calls and emails her and Jeni shared over the last several months. She knew that they were having a difficult time with the schedule aspect of their relationship, but it was clear Bethany expected to see Stephen and not Brian at the wedding. With Bethany’s planning of the wedding, Jeni hadn’t been able to chat with her on the phone much in the past few weeks, so she had been unable to fill her in on the official breakup. Jeni smiled at her friend to let her know that nothing had changed between Brian and her. They were still collecting the “perks” of their friendship.
“Congratulations, Bethany,” Brian said. He leaned in and gave her a soft kiss on the cheek. “You look wonderful.” He held out his hand to Tim, who shook it firmly. “Congrats to you too, man. She’s a keeper.” Tim smiled in agreement, and Brian winked at Bethany.
“We will catch up soon,” Bethany said, smiling that smile that said “we need to have some girl talk soon.” She still had Jeni’s hands in hers.
“Call me when you get back from your honeymoon,” Jeni said and gave Bethany a big hug. “Maybe we can arrange a girls’ weekend and catch up.”
“I’d love that!” Bethany kissed her back. “Maybe you’d head back here for a Buckeyes home game?”
“Absolutely,” Jeni said as two other people approached the bride and groom. “Love you.” Jeni grabbed Brian’s hand and led him to the bar across the way.
“She has not changed much at all,” Brian said, leaning on the bar to order their drinks. He ordered Jeni another whiskey and Coke and himself a beer.
“No, she really hasn’t,” Jeni agreed. She leaned against the bar next to him. “I remember meeting her the first day of college. I thought she was a lunatic. All bubbly and ready to burst at the seams at any moment. I was sure I would ask for a new roommate before the end of that first semester.” Jeni chuckled at that, because her and Bethany had had such an amazing time in college together and now remained truly good friends.
“Yeah, I thought it was an odd pairing too at first,” Brian said. He took a sip of his beer that the bartender slid across the bar. Jeni took a sip of her own drink. She felt the teasing burn of the whiskey flow down her throat and loved that feeling. She didn’t drink daiquiris or pina coladas or fuzzy navels. When she drank alcohol at all, it was whiskey or a good beer. “She seemed all sorority, and you were anything but.”
“Well, there was a time period when you were all sorority too,” Jeni said, giving him a nudge with her elbow.
“True,” he said with a laugh. He took another swig of this beer. “I did have a thing for the sorority sisters for a little while.” He placed his hand at the small of her back and leaned into her. “But they never had a thing on you,” he whispered in her ear, and a chill ran down her back. “There has never been another girl on this planet that I’ve found that compares to you. Even though I’ve said this a ton of times
