as if she wouldnât tolerate any other diagnosis.
âThey have to run more tests,â Herb said. âWe should know something in another day or so. Like she says, itâs probably nothing, but better to be safe than sorry.â
Cade nodded. âAgreed.â
âAnyway,â Rosie said, âyou can see Iâm in good hands. Judging from the way you look, Iâll bet you drove all night to get here. I appreciate you doing that, but now you should go back to the ranch and get some sleep.â
âIâm okay.â
âYouâre dead on your feet. Herb, talk him into going home. In fact, you should go with him. Iâll be fine here.â
Herb glanced at Cade. âIâm going to hang around a little longer, but sheâs right. Go home and rest. You can come back later, after you pick up Damon.â
âAfter he does what?â Rosie pushed a button that adjusted the bed, letting her sit up a little more. âDamonâs coming in?â
âAt one today.â Belatedly Cade realized that having them all descend might be alarming rather than comforting. âAnd Finnâs coming, too, but that doesnât mean we thinkââ
âThat Iâm about to croak? I hope not! Unless Herb knows something heâs not telling me.â
âI swear I donât.â Herb held up both hands. âI had nothing to do with this. Lexi called Cade, and Cade called the other two.â
âAnd it might boil down to indigestion,â Rosie repeated, shaking her head. âWhat in heavenâs name did Lexi say to you, Cade, that started this frantic race to my bedside?â
âItâs my fault.â Herb scrubbed a hand over his face. âYou showed all the classic signs of a heart attack. For all we know, you actually had one. When I called Lexi and asked her to come over and watch the place for us, I might have been a little...upset.â
âOh.â Rosieâs expression softened as she looked at her husband. âI guess I scared you worse than I thought.â
Herb shrugged. âI, um...â He paused to clear his throat. âYeah, I was scared.â
Her voice was gentle. âYou still are.â
âA little. But youâre looking lots better, and Iâm sure youâre right that itâs nothing to be concerned about. Anyway, the boys will be here. Thatâs good news, right?â
âYes, it certainly is.â Rosie glanced at Cade. âBut when you talk to them, could you let them know Iâm not at deathâs door? And donât let them bring flowers. That would really freak me out, if I thought Iâd be in here long enough to need flowers.â
âGot it.â Cade hadnât thought about flowers, mostly because nothing had been open when heâd driven into town, but Damon and Finn might have insisted they bring her some. Good thing Rosie had said something or she likely would have ended up with three monster bouquets.
About that time his cell chimed, indicating a text. âThat could be Finn.â He pulled out his cell. âYep. Heâll be in a little after three.â
Rosie sighed. âI donât want to think about what those plane tickets must have cost, but whatâs done is done, and Iâll be tickled to see you all together again.â
âIâm sure they donât care what the tickets cost.â Just like Cade hadnât worried about giving up a potential job opportunity. Some things were more important.
âNo, they probably donât care.â Rosie gave him a fond smile. âThatâs the kind of guys you all are. I suppose youâll want to stay in your old cabin, but the beds arenât made and the place hasnât been dusted in months.â
âDoesnât matter.â Cade had assumed thatâs where theyâd bunk. âDo you still keep the sheets and blankets in that big hall closet?â
âYes, but
