especially now that sheâd made another unexpected appearance when heâd thought she was safely tucked into bed, asleep. His bed.
Turning, he thanked his unlucky stars that he couldnât make out much more than her form. He didnât need to get another good look at the ultrathin, short shirt that revealed too much leg and the outlineof her breasts. But it really didnât matter considering all that he imagined underneath her limited attire.
He cleared away the images and the hitch from his throat. âI thought Iâd keep watch for a while, just in case someone saw the flares.â
She took a step forward. âNo luck, I take it.â
âNo, no luck. But itâs fairly foggy tonight.â The current conditions complemented his hazy mind.
âMaybe someone will come soon.â She hugged her arms tightly around her and moved closer.
The railing behind him kept Jack from backing up. He didnât really want to back away, but it might be best before he did something incredibly insane, like kiss her again, or lay her down on the deck without formality.
âCanât sleep?â he asked, knowing in fact that he couldnât if his boatâs survival depended on it.
âIâm trying, but Iâm a little cold. I thought maybe you might have an extra blanket I could use.â
He almost offered to keep her warm. Almost. âYeah. In the armoire next to the bed. Top shelf.â
She hesitated a moment, the sudden silence as thick as the night mist. âAre you coming in soon?â
âIn a bit.â
âHow long is a bit?â
Surely she wasnât going to proposition him again. If she did, he might be tempted to take her up on her offer despite the fact he shouldnât. âI donât know. A few more minutes, I guess. Why?â
She turned her face to one side, allowing Jack the benefit of her pleasing profile. âIf I tell you why I want you inside, promise not to laugh?â
He wanted to do a lot of things. Laughing was not one of them. âIâll try to restrain myself.â Solid advice he should heed where she was concerned.
âYouâre going to think Iâm a big chicken.â
Considering sheâd displayed little fear after her ordeal, and sheâd chosen to raise a child on her own, he could honestly say heâd never known a more courageous woman. âI seriously doubt that.â
âYes, you will.â
âTry me.â If only he could allow that in the literal sense.
She sighed. âI really donât like being alone.â
Funny, Jack thought, since he preferred to be alone. âYou donât live alone?â
âNoâ¦yes. I didnât until last week. My roommate, Ian, moved in with someone else.â
âYou had a male roommate?â
âA very good friend.â
âOnly a friend?â Now, why had he asked that? And worse, heâd actually sounded jealous.
âYes. You seem surprised.â
He was. Very. âPersonally, Iâd have a hard time living with a woman for an extended period and keeping it on a platonic level.â
âYou donât have any women friends?â Now she sounded shocked.
âNo, guess not.â
âYou really should try it.â He saw a flash of white teeth and heard the smile in her voice. âMaybe it would enable you to get in touch with your feminine side.â
Heâd rather get in touch with her feminine side. âSo were you and this Ian pretty close?â
âYes, you could say that. Until he found the love of his life.â
From her tone, Jack wondered if she hadnât been completely honest. Maybe sheâd had a thing for this guy at one time. It was none of his business, but he had to ask. âIs he the father of your child?â
âOh, no. It wasnât that way between us. I worked with him at a day spa and salon, before I established my balloon business.â
âIs he
