Lucky scanned the ice-capped mountains surrounding them. They were filled with a labyrinth of caverns. The perfect place to mount an ambush. Cold wind whistled through the valley, chilling the air. Lucky studied the trail for anything amiss. It was time to focus. Tolley could take care of himself. Landis wouldn’t last a day without protection, and he intended to be the one who watched out for her.
The border village of Fachan was once a fae stronghold. Nestled in the side of a mountain, it was the last settlement before descending into the Agrona lowlands. Perfectly positioned with unobstructed views of the mountains behind the town and the valleys below it, now it was known for being frequented by the more unsavory creatures. It was the best place to conduct the business he had in mind. He should be able to get in and get out of the village without too much trouble.
Lucky glanced at Landis’ feet. The strange, thin, fabric shoes she wore wouldn’t do well as they traveled closer to the Winterlands. She needed boots. He followed the sensuous curve of her legs up past generous hips and along the straight line of her back. With the unicorn’s very step, her hair swept her shoulders. She sat on Dubh as if she were accustomed to riding the beast. Spine straight and legs relaxed, she looked regal in the saddle. And she hadn’t said a word since they went to sleep.
Last night, he’d straightened the blanket, lain down, and yanked her against his body. After the night of lovemaking they’d shared, he wasn’t about to give her time to think. As if she was made for him, he curled his body around hers and pressed his face against the back of her neck. She had a scent that was exclusively hers and made him drunk with want every time he inhaled. It wasn’t a singular fragrance but a combination of many, like wildflowers and salty sea air. With her secure in his arms, for the first time since he was a child, he’d slept soundly.
That wasn’t a good thing. They could have been attacked by any number of traveling folks. Dubh or Tolley might have needed him. He didn’t want to think about what might have happened if they were under assault and he didn’t have his wits about him.
Sunrise had come way too soon, and with the dawn, Tolley delivered several hard kicks to his side. When he cracked open his lids to look up, his old friend grunted a few comments, turned on his heel, and started breaking down their camp. For some reason, the giant was pissed. Lucky sat up and yawned. Landis muttered something in her sleep and burrowed into the warm spot he’d vacated. Her dark skin reminded him of the berries that grew around his home, so sweet, one was never enough. The material she yanked over her body slipped to the side, exposing her long, luscious legs. He stared at her a long time, wishing he could make love to her again. His erection tented the old cover that pooled around his waist. In the background, Dubh snickered and finally, Lucky gently eased away from Landis. Another time, he would worship her body, but first he needed to get her to a safe place. Priorities were a pain in the arse.
Dressed, he had worked silently with Tolley to clear any sign that they had been there. After everything was packed, he woke Landis. She sat up and stretched. Wiping a hand down her face, she glanced around camp. When she caught sight of Tolley, she snatched up the blanket to cover her breasts. Lucky chuckled as her lips formed a firm line. Clothes weren’t a major issue. Some people could only afford a few basic garments. It wasn’t surprising to see folks naked on a wash day. Some didn’t wear garments at all—they didn’t need to.
He’d picked up her clothing and dropped the items next to her. She glanced at him, and he was sure unshed tears brimmed her lids. Lucky crouched and stroked her cheek with his fingers. Then he leaned forward and kissed her temple. Her
