everybody at our table by telling her that it wasn’t. I leaned in and was just about to ask Kate to talk somewhere more private when Amy caught me by the elbow and shoved me out of the booth. She’d already climbed over a stunned Eric and a thrilled Nick, who was getting an eyeful of her ass in those tight jeans.
“Come on rock star. We’re up. Kate, you should come and stand by the stage. You’ll get a better view.”
Sliding out of the booth I held my hand out to Amy who took it and crawled off the seat and onto her ridiculously high shoes.
Amy grabbed Kate’s hand and hauled her up, dragging her across to the stage area. Kate looked back over her shoulder at me with pleading eyes and once again I found myself making the comparison to the first time I’d brought Amy here. Except it was a very different girl she had dragged up. Mel stood beside me and placed her hand on my shoulder. “I know what you’re thinking and you have got to get past this Ollie. She’s made her choice and you have got to get over her. Maybe if you talked to her, got some closure you could…”
“I did.”
She grabbed me by the arms and turned me to face her as Nick and Eric brushed past us and headed for the stage.
“What? When? What happened?”
The sound of the mic screeching caught our attention and I looked over to see Amy glaring at us with her hands fisted on her hips. “If the other two members of D.O.A could please join the rest of us?”
I shook my head at Mel and walked towards the stage. She yelled after me. “Ollie!”
I wasn’t doing this. Not here. Not now. “We’ll talk about it later.” I shouted over my shoulder at her.
Eric handed me his guitar as I climbed up onto the stage. The lights were brighter than I remembered or I had just forgotten how they felt. The whole bar was packed to bursting with people, mostly college kids, and as I stepped up to the mic I felt a little nervous. I hadn’t performed in months!
I turned and gave Nick and Eric a nod and they immediately started playing the intro to ‘Without You’ by Hinder. It just seemed appropriate.
It pretty much summed up how I felt, even if I was just trying to convince myself. Closing my eyes, I sang every word like I meant it and even started to believe the lyrics that were leaving my mouth. When I opened them again, my gaze fell on Kate who was standing at the front of the stage, looking up at me all starry eyed. Shit .
This wasn’t gonna be easy. How do you tell a girl you are total ly into her, you think she’s sexy hot and wanna screw her brains out but you can’t because you don’t think she’ll like the walk of shame the next day and you sure as hell aren’t looking for a girlfriend. But I wasn’t going to have time to think about it because as the song ended and I climbed down from the stage, she was waiting for me.
“You we’re amazing! You guys rock!” I grinned and ran my fingers through my hair.
“Thanks. Listen; do you wanna go somewhere a little more private? Just to talk.”
She smiled that cute little smile of hers and nodded. Amy was watching me like a hawk from across the bar as I guided Kate to an empty table near the back. We sat down and I felt like a total shit for what I was about to say. She was still gazing at me and I was finding it hard not to get caught up in it. “So, here’s the thing. I like you. You’re a great girl but…” I struggled to think of the nicest way possible to let her down but she interrupted me before I could continue.
“Ollie, if this is the part where you tell me I’m a really great girl but you’re just not looking for a relationship right now, you can spare me. I’m not either. I met you at the party and I thought then you were hot.”
“ I saw you at the coffee shop and decided you were totally my type and if the opportunity came up…I would take it. And now, here we are. So the question now is…” She leaned across the table and stroked her fingertips over
