my life, I feel like I have met someone who really gets me. And I don’t want to keep that inside. I want to shout it out loud, telling everyone I know.”
His words were admittedly very flattering, but I couldn’t agree with his logic. I mean we obviously had to keep the relationship a secret. It didn’t seem like we had much of a choice.
“I understand what you’re saying,” I said, as I placed my hand over his. “But this whole arrangement between us was always meant to be a secret. From the very first time that we met and I was afraid that Mom would see us holding hands, up until now. It can’t be exposed, Connor. I’m sorry, but it’s just the way it is. It’s better for everyone that way. Not just us, but for Mom and Richard as well.”
Connor hesitantly nodded in agreement.
“I guess so,” he muttered. “I guess we can keep it a secret. Maybe it’s not that big of a deal. I mean everyone has secrets, right?”
He locked eyes with me as he spoke the last sentence. I cocked my head to the side.
What did he mean by that? Is he talking about his past?
I opened my mouth to ask about it, but then immediately changed my mind. It wasn’t the right time. We had just had sex for the first time ever and I didn’t want to bring up something so sensitive. Besides, I had a much better way of finding out that I hadn’t even thought of until that very moment.
Chapter 6
––––––––
T he next morning I woke up with my head still resting on Connor’s chest. His arm was wrapped around my shoulder, holding me close. I felt so secure as I lay there, like nothing in the world could hurt me. But Connor had always made me feel that way. Ever since the very first time we met. There was something about his presence that made me feel so safe. It felt like he really cared about me. And all of that made me really think that nothing my mom had told me about him could have been true. But I still had to find out, and I had an idea that was going to get me the information that I needed. So after a few more minutes of snuggling, I sat up and pressed on his shoulder.
“Wake up, sleepy head,” I said.
Connor stirred and then eventually opened his eyes. He lifted his hands above his head and stretched.
“Oh, wow...” he said. “What time is it?”
I glanced at the clock.
“It’s 9:30.”
Connor sat up and wiped the sleep from his eyes.
“Damn, I can’t remember the last time that I slept in this late,” he said. “I’m usually up by 5, at the latest. I guess I was really comfortable with you laying next to me.”
I leaned forward and gave him a quick peck on the lips. As I pulled away, I said. “Me too. It was really nice.”
Connor smiled and placed his hand on my lower back, pulling me close to him. We sat next to each other on the bed and I leaned my head against his shoulder.
“This is our secret, though, right?” I asked.
Connor turned and kissed me on the cheek, then nodded his head.
“Of course,” he responded. “I promise that nobody will find out. And you’ll learn that I’m extremely tight-lipped. I can keep a secret for a lifetime.”
I immediately thought of the potential secrets that he actually had been keeping for a lifetime.
“Well, good,” I responded.
With my eyes closed, I relaxed into him for a moment.
“I should call my mom,” I said, after a few seconds of silence. “I told her that I was going camping with a girlfriend and I ought to let her know that I’m safe.”
Connor kissed me again on the cheek.
“Sounds good,” he said. “I’ll be right here when you get back. I think I’m going to have a lazy day for once.”
I crawled out of bed and got dressed. Connor watched me with a smile, then he slowly closed his eyes once again, drifting back to sleep. As quietly as I could, I tiptoed out of the bedroom and into the main area of the house. Then I walked out the front door, closing it as softly as I could behind me. The morning sun was already
