her thoughts and watched Rafe approaching them. He wasnât cute, she thought. He was dark and dangerous and so sexy just watching him walk made her toes curl. Golden retrievers were cute. Rafe wasâ¦tempting.
âWhatâd you say his name was?â
âRafe. Rafe Cole.â
âHmmâ¦â
Katie looked at her grandmother, but the womanâs expression was carefully blank. Which usually meantthere was something going on in Nanaâs mind that she didnât want anyone else to know about. But before Katie could wriggle the information out of her, Rafe was standing in front of them. She made the introductions, then Rafe spoke up.
âI just wanted to tell you that weâll be shutting down early tonight. Joeâs got a meeting and he wants Arturo and Steve there.â
âNot you?â she asked.
He shook his head. âNo reason for me to be there. Iâm just a worker bee. Anyway,â he said, with a smile for her grandmother, âit was nice to meet you.â
âGood to meet you too, Rafe,â Nana said with a smile.
When he walked away, Katieâs gaze was locked on him. His long legs, the easy, confident strides he took, the way the sunlight glinted on his black hair. And yes, she admitted silently, she liked the view of his butt in those faded jeans, too.
Finally though, she turned her gaze to her grandmother. The thoughtful expression on her Nanaâs face had her asking, âOkay, whatâs going on? Whatâre you thinking?â
âMe? Only wondering if he has a grandfather as good looking as he is.â
âYouâre hiding something,â Katie said, narrowing her eyes.
âMe?â Emily slapped one hand to her chest and widened her eyes in innocence. âIâm an open book, sweetie. What you see is what you get.â
âNanaâ¦â
She checked her wristwatch and said, âOh, I have to fly. Grace and I have a double date tonight with a coupleof frisky widowers. Iâm meeting Grace for manicures in half an hour.â
Katie laughed and gave her a hug. âYouâre amazing.â
âSo are you, when you give yourself a chance.â Emily slid a look at Rafe again. âWhy not invite that boy to dinner? Live a little, Katie. You like him, donât you?â
âYeah,â Katie said, shifting her gaze back to Rafe. âI do. I mean, Iâve only known him a week, but Iâve spent so much time with him, it feels like longer. Heâs a nice guy, Nana. A regular guy. Nothing like Cordell King and believe me, thatâs a good thing. Iâve had it with the idle rich.â
âNot all rich guys are idle,â Emily pointed out. âOr, jerks for that matter.â
âMaybe,â Katie said, but she wasnât convinced. Granted, she hadnât had a lot of experience with rich men. Cordell had been the one and only billionaire sheâd ever known. But if he was an example of their breed, then he was more than enough to last her a lifetime. âFrom now on though, Iâm only interested in regular, hardworking guys.â
âYou have your motherâs hard head, God bless her.â Nana blew out a breath and said, âFine. This Rafe seems nice enough and heâs surely easy on the eyes.â
âThat he is,â Katie agreed, letting her gaze slide back to the man whose image had been filling her dreams lately.
âBut you never really know a man until youâve hit the sack with him.â
âNana!â Katie groaned and shook her head. âWhat kind of role model are you, anyway?â
âThe good kind.â Emily laughed, clearly delighted at being able to shock her granddaughter so easily. âIâmjust saying, it might be interesting to take him out for a test drive, thatâs all.â
Katie loved her grandmother, but she was in no way the free spirit Emily OâHara was. But then Nana hadnât always been this
