moment it hit him, he slammed his mouth so hard against mine that my head hit the pillow with force. He tensed, his body turning into a rock on top of me. When he let out a sigh and released, his lips softened and kissed me tenderly.
Jax rolled to the side, and we both lay on our backs for a moment, catching our breath. I rolled over first, resting on one elbow as I studied him. “That feels better.”
He laughed, reaching over to pull me to him. I put my ear against his chest and rested my head, listening to the sound of his breathing as it normalized.
“What specifically feels better? Or is it just everything?” He patted my back. “I have that effect sometimes.”
I laughed. “The tension. You know, like I feel like we had this tension that needed resolving.”
“You’re right about that.” He rolled over, trapping me beneath him. His face was no more than an inch from mine, his breath hot on my face. “Don’t run from me again, understand?”
My heart thumped in my chest, but not from fear.
“I ran to you, don’t you remember?”
He raised himself onto his elbows, giving us a little more space. “Before that.”
I did my best at a shrug. “Everyone has their good days and their bad days.”
It was a lousy answer, but I couldn’t figure out what kind of answer he wanted. Did he want me to declare my undying love and devotion to him or something? Or was a promise that I wouldn’t run good enough?
“I won’t run as long as you don’t,” I said quietly.
Inside my head, Melissa was saying ‘careful Anna, your insecurities are showing…’
But, by some sort of miracle, Jax didn’t seem to think it was a weird thing to say. He shook his head and kissed me again, his lips firm.
“And, I want to see more of you.”
I smiled. “I guess I could come by The Cruise more often.”
“Or you could invite me up to your deck,” he said, grinning. “Seems like you guys have quite the party up there sometimes.”
I laughed. “You could say that,” I said. “It’s a fun place to hang out on summer evenings.”
    “How’s the view?”
“It’s the best view in town.”
He smiled. “Not from where I’m looking.”

The rain splattered off the pavement, the splashes hitting the girl’s muddy shoes and socks as she stayed in her spot by the wall, sitting with her head bowed and resting on her knees as her arms hugged them. She was under an awning, but it didn’t matter anyway, for she was already soaked from head to toe.
Her mother had brought her here, explicitly ordering her to wait on this spot until she finished shopping before walking away. That was four hours ago. She believed her mother would come and pick her up, so she continued to wait out in the same spot, not venturing to look for a better cover, fearing her mother might not be able to find her if she left.
A cold wind blew through her and she shivered violently, proceeding to rub her hands together and blowing her breath on them in an effort to accumulate some heat. She heard scrunching noises coming near and she turned her head, eyes wide with hope, only for it to be dashed when she saw that it wasn’t her mother, but a boy standing before her.
He was scruffy, wearing a leather jacket that was too big for him and the sleeves covered his hands and were hanging off, his shoes were muddy and worn, and his hair was spiked up in every direction due to the dirt and water clinging to it. His cheek even had a smear of mud, and she wrinkled her nose in slight disgust, forgetting that she didn’t look much better.
“What are you doing over there?” the boy asked, raising an eyebrow at her.
“What’s it look like?” she snapped back, and his brows furrowed.
“Like an idiot wanting to get sick, that’s what!” he fired.
She stood up and walked up to the boy, pushing
