galaxy? To make sure . . . our planet is still there?â
Officer Erard waved his hand vaguely. âRadiation.â
âThat sounds bad!â Sarah shrieked.
âBut donât worry,â Officer Bosendorfer said cheerfully. âThese things usually clear up in a couple thousand years.â
Dexter had a sudden coughing fit.
Officer Erardâs handheld device squawked to life. âOfficer Bosendorfer and Officer Erard, come in. Officer Bosendorfer and Officer Erard, come in. Please respond immediately to a code brown.â
Suddenly it was Officers Bosendorferâs and Erardâs turn to look pale. Officer Erard gasped for breath. âDo you . . . do you mean . . .â
âMick Cracken is headed your way. You must give chase!â
âMick Cracken?!â Officer Bosendorfer shuddered. His bottom lip began to quiver and he looked as if he might cry. âDo we have to?â
CHAPTER 10
J acob had read that outer space is completely silent because thereâs no air or water or anything else to transmit sound, just one big vacuum of nothing. That didnât apply to the insides of spaceships, of course, because they were filled with air, but still, Jacob never would have guessed that the quietest moment he would experience in outer space would have involved two space officers stunned into silence by the name Mick Cracken.
Officers Bosendorfer and Erard were slumped in their chairs staring out the cockpit window, radiating an acute sense of panic. Officer Bosendorfer sniffed once and rubbed his eyes. Officer Erard stared straight up at the roof and shook his head. Jacob, Sarah, and Dexter looked around at one another and shrugged their shoulders.
Finally, Sarah Daisy broke the quiet. âWhoâs Mick Cracken?â
Officer Bosendorfer waved his hand at her. âYoung lady, this is no time for bravery,â he said.
Officer Erard sighed. âYou know I canât even say his name?â
âI can say his name,â Officer Bosendorfer said. âBut it makes me shudder every time. Watch this. Mick Cracken.â Officer Bosendorfer didnât shudder. âWell, that time I didnât shudder, but usually I shudder. Itâs not usually something I can control, I . . .â Officer Bosendorfer shuddered. âOh. There. See? Delayed shudder that time.â
âI just never ever want to even think aboutââ
âWho is Mick Cracken?!â Sarah asked again. This time the officers looked over at her.
âYou mean youâre not afraid of him?â Officer Bosendorfer said.
âI donât even know who he is.â
âWell, donât tell him that.â Officer Erard shook his head. âHe hates that more than anything.â
âMick Cracken,â Officer Bosendorfer said with a shudder, âis the most rotten, black-hearted buccaneer this side of the Big Dipper.â
âHeâs dangerous,â Officer Erard said.
âHeâs tough.â
âHeâs strong.â
âHeâs crazy.â
âHe once stole the hair off of the princessâs cat.â
âAnd the cat didnât even notice.â
âHeâs dangerous.â
âYou already said that,â Sarah said.
Officer Erard turned to Officer Bosendorfer. âYou have to admit, he is clever though.â
âToo clever.â
âHeâsââ
A loud, piercing alarm sounded on the officersâ uniforms. Officer Erard slumped farther down in his chair. âHeâs here.â
âHeâs here?!â Sarah shrieked.
Officer Bosendorfer patted Sarah on the back. âWe can only hope he doesnât steal you,â he said gravely.
âHa,â Sarah said, âIâd love to see him try.â But then she swallowed nervously.
Jacob Wonderbar jumped out of his chair and stood in front of the group. He didnât know what he planned to do, but he wasnât going to sit around and wait
