a wide grin on his face and Lisa didnât know how to politely cancel without offending him.
â¢Â â¢Â â¢
It was a little after nine when Lisa got home. She walked in to find her mother and daughter at the kitchen table playing cards. âHey guys. . .â
âHey, how was the meeting?â
âIt was great. Chanelle, are you going to speak?â
âI said hi when you walked in.â
âIâm sorry, I didnât hear you.â
âUNO!â Chanelle shouted.
âNuh-uh. . .â Hattie smirked, throwing a Draw Four card on the table.
âHow was school today?â Lisa asked.
âFine. . .â
âI tried calling to let you know Iâd be late.â
âI know. . .â
âWhy didnât you answer the phone?â
âBecause Iâm on punishment. . .Iâm not supposed to talk on the phone, remember? You took away my cell phone for that very purpose,â Chanelle said with such a snide attitude that Lisa couldâve smacked her.
âGo to your room!â she ordered.
âWhy?â
âCâmon, Lisa, weâre in the middle of a game,â her mother jumped in.
âI donât care, Mama. Sheâs not going to get smart with me.â
âI canât say or do anything around here!â Chanelle ranted, smashing her cards down on the table and storming out of the kitchen.
âSay something else and see if I donât come upstairs and hold your butt accountable for your smart mouth!â Lisa yelled after her.
âWhy are you always threatening that girl?â
âMama, donât start with me. Iâm not in the mood.â Lisa slumped into Chanelleâs chair and began rubbing her aching feet.
âDonât you think you were a little harsh?â
âNo, I donât.â
âSheâs almost grown. When are you going to start cutting her some slack?â
âYou donât seem to think Chanelle should get in trouble for anything. Youâre always taking up for her and making excuses when sheâs wrong.â
â I am not, â Hattie said defiantly, gathering all the UNO cards. âI see things from a different perspective and Iâm trying to get you to understand that every offense doesnât necessarily deserve punishment.â
âLiving in this house it does; especially when lying is involved.â
âFine, Lisa. Iâve said all I have to say. No one can tell you anything. I raised two children already, but apparently you know more than I do, so Iâll just leave you be. But, if it were my childââ
âChanelleâs not your child; thatâs the whole point! The sooner you realize that Iâm her mother and youâre her grandmother, the better off weâll all be.â
âWhatâs that supposed to mean?â
âIâm just saying, Mama. You need to let me raise her, even if you donât agree with the decisions I make. Whether Iâm right or wrong, Chanelle needs to obey me. Itâll be much easier for her to do so without you always undermining my authority.â
âSo are you saying that I somehow contributed to her going out and getting drunk Saturday night?â
âNo. Chanelle is no angel, but things have never been this bad.Things seemed to have gotten worse since you moved up here.â
Her mother stood up with her hand on her hip, cocked her head to the side and looked at her like she was crazy. âLetâs remember that you are the one who begged me to move up here. I had a home and was just fine with my living arrangements.â
Lisa stood as well. âFor the record, I asked, not begged you to move here with me. Excuse me for caring about you getting beat up all the time.â
She watched as her motherâs cheeks burned with fire. Lisa didnât really want to go there, but how dare her mother be so ungrateful!
âMake no
