crooked front teeth.
âWhen I realized something was wrong,â she went on, âI stopped by your house, and your sister said you were here. I rode my bike over as fast as I could, but I donât know if it was in time. Youâ¦you almost pulled that womanâs soul out of her body.â
He should have been shocked at the idea of someone being able to take souls, especially someone like Lena. But if he could make people fall in love with a bolt of energy, then why couldnât those other things be true? Stillâ¦people didnât just swap powers. Heâd memorized the manual Eddie had given him, and nowhere did it even hint at anything like that being possible.
He wanted to tell Lena all this, but instead he found himself saying, âItâs a scythe.â
She blinked. âWhat?â
âThe scary pointy tool. Itâs called a scythe. And itâs for farming, not gardening. I read about it in a book on the history ofââ
âYouâre not getting the point. You almost killed someone!â Lena cried, nostrils flaring. âIâm not saying itâs your fault, but didnât you notice that something was wrong? Didnât you think it was kind of weird that your fingers were glowing?â
âNot exactlyââ Marcus began, but she wasnât listening.
âWhatever is going on, I need to figure out how to fix it.â Lena pulled out her phone. âIâll try sending Eddie another message. Why is he ignoring me when I told him it was an emergency?â
âEddie?â Marcus repeated.
âYes,â she said, furiously typing on her phone. âHeâs my boss.â
âWait. Eddieâs your boss?â Marcus couldnât believe it. Was there a staffing shortage or something? âEddieâs my boss too.â
She didnât look up. âThatâs nice.â
âNo, you donât get it. Eduardo? Grayish hair, dark beard? Sounds like he lived in Spain a million years ago? Loves gadgets?â
Lena looked up, her eyes suddenly suspicious. âHow do you know all that?â
âIâm telling you. Heâs my boss too. Youâre a soul collector? Well, Iâm a matchmaker. Like Cupid but without the diaper.â
Before she could answer, someone behind them let out a loud whistle. An instant later, Eddie sped around the corner on a Segway. He was exactly as Marcus had described him.
âWell, shoot,â Eddie said when heâd pulled up in front of them. âSo you two really did swap powers. How are we going to fix that?â
Chapter 7
Lenaâs brain felt like it was about to explode. Marcus was some kind of supernatural matchmaker? If she didnât have Eddie standing two feet away, confirming the fact that it was true, she would have laughed right in his face. Being a soul collector was one thing. Death was a normal part of life. But love? Love was a total lie invented by the people who made romantic comedies and heart-shaped candy. Just ask her dad about that.
âThis is crazy,â she said, jumping to her feet. âHow is it possible to switch powers?â
Eddie shook his head, still perched on his Segway, his red helmet gleaming in the sun. âIt should not be, but somehow it has happened. At least, that is the message I got. And my boss is not happy. So give me the details.â
âWait, what about Olivia?â Marcus asked. âIs she going to be okay?â
Lena figured that had to be the woman heâd zapped.
Eddie waved his hand dismissively, sending his Segway wobbling. âDonât worry about that right now. Just tell me when you first knew something was wrong.â
âIt was during my collection,â Lena said. âI zapped Mrs. Katz like I was supposed to, but instead of dying, she got all weird and started giggling with the mailman.â
âThe mailman?â Marcus let out a weak laugh. âMaybe heâll send her
