    â€œI wasn’t paying attention. What did he say?”
    â€œHe said the Yankees are bringing up a couple of third basemen from the minors to play out the rest of the season.”
    â€œWell, that would only make sense.” Stephen took a sip of his coffee. “Alex Rodriguez can appeal his suspension all he wants, but there’s no way that fine Latino is going to be playing next season. The Yankees have to bring up a couple of minor leaguers so they can get some experience playing behind Jayson Nix.”
    Cheryl nodded. “Nix has had a good year on third, and the Yankees are going to be banking on getting Rodriguez back as soon as the suspension is over, so they probably aren’t going to try to spend any really big bucks bringing in a free agent.”
    â€œRight. So they bring in a couple of guys now, see who’s best, and decide who they’ll sign for next season to play behind Nix.”
    â€œOkay, listen to this,” Cheryl said animatedly. “Randy is a third baseman.”
    â€œWho’s Randy?” Stephen looked puzzled.
    â€œYou know him better by young country bumpkin.” Cheryl rolled her eyes. “Anyway, he plays for the Yankees farm team in Scranton.”
    Stephen sat up straight. “Uh-huh. And?”
    â€œAnd it turns out that all of a sudden he’s being courted by a big-name sports agent.”
    â€œUh-huh, uh-huh,” Stephen said eagerly. “And?”
    â€œAnd did I mention that he asked me to marry him?”
    â€œGirl, stop!” Stephen jumped off the couch, spilling his coffee onto the hardwood floor. “Oh, now look what you’ve made me do. Please don’t tell me he was serious, and you better not be telling me that if he was serious that you’re considering doing it. And puleeze don’t tell me you’re marrying the next Alex Rodriguez.” Stephen stopped abruptly, as if a thought suddenly hit him. “Girl, young country bumpkin is a might too ugly to be replacing that handsome-ass Alex.”
    â€œIf he makes it to the majors—even if he only makes the league minimum of four hundred thousand—he can afford to get a good haircut, and a whole bunch of Proactiv.” Cheryl leaned back, and crossed her legs; a satisfied smile on her face. “But let’s see what happens in the next few months before we start shopping for a wedding dress.”
