firmly.
âNo, he tried. But he would kiss me and . . . and it was as if he was asking for something I couldnât give. He wanted me to be his wife, but I couldnât do it. Kisses, hugs, those everyday signs of affection felt so meaningless. I couldnât stand that feeling. So I pushed him away.â
Lena paused on the trail and withdrew her water bottle. âHow much further?â
âWeâre almost there,â Georgia said. âPromise.â
Almost thereâÂwasnât that the story of her life these days? Sheâd come so far, learning what triggered her anxiety and putting coping mechanisms in place. But if she wanted to reach the pinnacle, she had to keep climbing.
âIâm sorry youâre going through this,â Katie said. âListening to the two of you, my life seems so easy and normal. What youâve lived through, and what youâre living with now, amazes me.â
âDonât discount normal, Katie,â Lena said quietly. âBecause that is where Iâm headed and Iâm going to get there. One day.â
T W O H O U R S L A T E R , as the sun rose high in the sky, Lena steered her truck down Katieâs driveway, heading to her borrowed home.
âThanks for giving me a ride,â Katie said. âMy brothers are going to lose it when they find out my wagon wouldnât start. Theyâve been after me to get a new car, maybe a pickup, ever since Moore Timber cut the check to purchase our familyâs trucking business.â
âItâs nice that they look out for you,â Lena said.
âSometimes. Most of the time it is just annoying.â Katie leaned forward. âWow, look at that. Lena, Iâll eat my words if my brothers went out and bought me a midnight blue convertible.â
âMercedes convertible?â Lena asked, scanning the parking area, because the details mattered, especially when it came to unfamiliar cars at her temporary home.
âI think so,â Katie said.
Lena hit the brake. Hard. Parked beside the barn was a midnight blue Mercedes convertible. Once upon a time, sheâd driven that car, loving the feel of the wind in her hair. But that was back when her life had felt like a fairy tale.
âOh, and look, it came with a hot guy in a suit,â Katie added. âYou know, I donât think this is a present from my brothers. Or Liam.â
âNo.â Lena put the truck in park and opened her door. âIt belongs to Malcolm. My ex. I donât know how he found me here.â
She climbed down with Hero following close behind her. As soon as they were out of the truck, Hero moved in front of her, demanding to take the lead, his yellow duck clutched tight between his teeth.
âLena, wait,â Katie called. âShould I get my brothers?â
âNo.â Lena held her head high following her dog. âMalcolmâs harmless. I just wasnât expecting him.â
âIf youâre sure,â Katie said, eyeing Malcolm as if trying to assess whether the tall, lean man with the boyish good looks and expensive clothes that screamed, Tech nerd was a threat.
âI am,â Lena said. âWhy donât you head inside?â
Katie gave Malcolm a little wave and turned to the main farmhouse. Knowing it was only a matter of time before one of the Summers brothers appearedâÂKatie would send them despite Lenaâs reassurancesâÂLena approached her ex-Âhusband. She stopped a few feet away, allowing enough space for Hero to stand between them.
âHi Lena.â He offered the goofy grin that once had the power to make her knees weak and her heart race. âI tried calling, but you turned off your cell.â
âIâm thinking about changing providers. Thereâs not a lot of serÂvice out here.â
While that might be true, her phone had been turned off when sheâd stopped paying the bill. But if she told her
