the crater rim took money to abandon their posts. Â They were later killed by the Fârar. Â Iâm sure there were others.â
âTell me more!â
âSo eager!â Â He laughed again. Â âEventually, the Fârar got into the south defenses of the bluff. Â But before that happened, I saw a curious thing, what looked like a wine cart being ridden off to the East. Â A band of Fârar chased it, and eventually they overtook it. Â And I said to myself, âI must have that cart!ââ
I must have looked pensive, because he leaned closer to the fire and said, âWhat are you thinking, Ransom? Â That will be my name for you, I believe, since you refuse to give me your own.â
I nodded absently, thinking of general Xarr...
âAnd now,â the Mighty announced, âwe will have that dessert! Â My women are excellent cooks!â
âYour...harem?â
âOf course! Â Every Yern of import must have one. Â And the women fight to be part of it!â
âDonât the women ever...object?â
His smile faded. Â âWhat is this silliness? Â Are we going to discuss Yern savagery again? Â These are the ways of my people, how it ever was!â
My own ire was building. Â âAnd if the women were to object?â
âThey would be beaten! Â And rightly so!â
âThis is just?â
He threw his paws up. Â âI should have known better than to discuss things of import with one like you. Â You are not Yern! Â You do not understand!â
âI donât suppose you consider me part of your harem now, do you?â I said defiantly.
âWho are you, that you speak to the Mighty like this!â Â He stood, angry. Â âYou are a guest, and one with kith! Â Of course you are not part of my harem! Â But tonight you will sleep with them!â
He stalked off, and in a moment one of the women I had seen in the large tent appeared out of the shadows.
âYou must come with me.â Â She had a sly smile on her face.
When I started to protest, she said, âNow. Â He is very angry.â
I followed her into the tent, where the other woman was making up a bed of pillows in one corner.
âYou will sleep here,â she said in the direct tones of a head servant brooking no discussion. Â When she turned to regard me she had the same cunning smile on her face.
âVery well,â I said.
The two of them retreated behind a curtain deeper into the tent.
âHe will be angry, but it will be worth it,â one of them said to the other, and then the two of them tittered.
I lay down on the bed they had made me, and immediately noticed an odd smell, which only grew in intensity. Â I began to gag.
Almost immediately the Mighty appeared, and when he saw me his face flushed in anger.
âWhat is the meaning of this? Â Who told you to sleep with the dogs?â
I got up, disgusted. Â âAnd your dogs are not trained to relieve themselves outside?â
âThey do what they wish. Â As do I.â Â
He threw open the back curtain to reveal the two cowering women behind it. Â In a moment the curtain dropped, and I heard the sounds of paw striking flesh and pitiful mewling.
I was about to push open the curtain and intercede when he reappeared, flushed with his exertions. Â But his ire had subsided.
âThey will wait on you hand and foot from now on,â he said, in an apologetic tone. Â âI should have known something like this would happen. Â The ways of women...â
He must not have liked the look on my face, because he stormed toward me, his anger rising again. Â âFor your information, Ransom,â he said, âmy mother headed this tribe before me. Â She had her own harem â of men.â
He stalked out. Â
In another moment the two chastened women appeared from behind the curtain. Â The
