dismiss, but it was a very
real concern, especially for Cain. “You know the one thing all my
years have taught me? The importance of balance. You help keep that
balance. People are born, so others have to die. It’s the way life
works.”
    “ Except for people like
us,” he said quietly.
    The tone—dejected and hesitant—made her
chest ache. “What are you worried about, Cain? Honestly?”
“ This is the first time—”
He cleared his throat. “Your magic lets me feel for a little while.
I find myself more reluctant to give that up than I could have
imagined.”
She wasn’t exactly eager to go back to a
life of desperate, fumbling sexual encounters—in fact, the thought
made her shake her head before she even realized what she was
doing. “I know what you mean. How you feel.”
    He rolled, pressing his
mouth to her ear. “Come home with me. I promise not to fuck
you all the
time.”
The first frisson of doubt tickled an uneasy
line up her spine. “My voice. Is that...everything?”
But Cain laughed. “Your voice only lets me
feel. It doesn’t make me feel good.”
    “ It gets you
off.”
“ So does my hand. I’m not
talking about physical sensation, Kelsey. I’m not numb. My body
feels. It’s the rest of me that’s usually cold.”
    “ Right.” Her cheeks heated,
and she covered her face. “I’m used to thinking of my effect on
people in terms of sex, that’s all.”
Cain tugged her hand away and tilted her
head back, forcing her to meet his dark, serious eyes. “I could
come here for sex every night if that was all I wanted. Your voice
counteracts my magic, but you and all of your odd, charming
contradictions? That’s what intrigues me.”
The tense, cold knot in the
pit of her stomach began to unravel. “You can’t fuck me all the time. I have a
job, you know. My patients will miss me.”
    “ Patients?” His so-serious
face melted into a frown. “You’re a doctor?”
    “ A veterinarian.” Kelsey
laughed and touched one corner of his mouth. “Turns out, animals
don’t care if you’re a Siren.”
He blinked before laughing. “No, I imagine
they wouldn’t.”
“ I have to deal with people
too, of course. But the charm I told you about draws its power
from my energy. It
has to, or it’d burn out too quickly. So too much or too fast...”
There was no way she could describe the exhaustion.
Cain pulled her to his chest. “You don’t
need it with me.”
No, with him she could be herself, and she
didn’t have to worry about losing control of the situation. She had
no control already, and nothing terrible had happened. To him,
nothing could. And if that had been the extent of her attraction to
him, she would have walked away. It wouldn’t be fair to him, same
as if he’d only been interested in the magical effects of her
voice.
    But something more drew her
to him—his sensitivity, his intensity, the flashes of humor under
his grave façade. So Kelsey stretched out and nestled her head on
his shoulder. “One rule. I’m not going to your company Christmas party.”
He laughed, his chest rumbling under her
hand, and he sounded anything but frozen. “Deal.”
