Whatever had happened had probably just saved my life and I wasn’t planning on hanging around to figure out what it was. I crawled across the floor, my gaze trained on the door.
It wasn’t until I made it to the entry way that I paused and dragged myself upright. The bar was in complete chaos and I could hear the distant wail of police sirens. Limping from the bar I headed in the direction of home, home and painkillers.

I was in the apartment five minutes when the sound of knocking had me freezing to the spot. Would Angelo and the others have been brave enough to follow me home? It certainly wasn’t impossible.
Pulling the ice pack from the freezer I hobbled back to the door and put my eye to the peep hole. It wasn’t Angelo, it wasn’t leather jacket or any of the others who had jumped me in the bar.
The man in the business suit I had spotted in the doorway of the bar stood on the other side of the door. Two men stood at his back. I knew the moment I lay eyes on them that they were private security and it wasn’t just because of the dark suits they wore. There was something about the way they held themselves, and of course the fact that their jackets didn’t sit snug over whatever arsenal they were carrying helped to make up my mind.
I contemplated pretending that I wasn’t in, but I was curious. I wanted to know what they wanted with me? And why the hell they had followed me back to my apartment. I had enough on my plate without being forced to deal with more crap.
I ripped open the door, allowing the heavy wood to slam into the plaster of the wall with a satisfying crack. I stood there in front of them, ice pack in hand. If one of them rushed me, I could use it as a weapon. Maybe the guy in the suit was a friend of Christopher’s and they were here to help me see the error of my ways.
    “Detective Crantree?”
The tall man wore dark glasses, and I couldn’t read his expression as he spoke.
“It’s just Mr Crantree now.” I said, lifting the icepack to the swelling that was beginning to occur on the side of my face.
“Oh? I thought you worked with the police? If I have the wrong Aidan Crantree then I’m sorry for disturbing you.”
“I did. I was suspended, so no you have the right Crantree. What do you want?”
“Suspended? Well that makes life infinitely easier.”
He pulled his glasses off and strode past me into the apartment. His eyes were cold, icy cold and they reminded me of Christopher’s. In fact there was a lot about him that reminded me of Christopher.
“I’m afraid we haven’t had the privilege?” I extended my free hand out to him, a question in my eyes. He saw it immediately and smiled.
“I can assure you, he and I are nothing alike. We share the same father but aside from that we share nothing else.”
His words didn’t matter, it didn’t matter that they apparently only shared a brother. It didn’t matter that they were only half brothers. All I heard in my head was a faint buzzing as I struggled to controlled the anger that filled me. His brother had taken Bella. His brother had taken the woman I loved and here he was standing in front of me, as though there was nothing amiss.
I grabbed him by the shirt, my fists bunching into the lapels of his jacket as I dragged him in towards my chest. My body screamed in protest, my ribs felt as though they were on fire, and yet I really didn’t care. It was his brother, he had to know where Bella was.
“Tell me where she is, tell me or I’ll rip you limb from limb.” I ground the words out.
I could hear the faint click as the safety was removed from a gun but I didn’t look back at the guards. I didn’t need to, I could practically feel the heat of their gazes trained on my back.
“I have an idea about where he might have taken her. But it’s bigger than that. I need your help, it’s why I’m here.”
    “Help?”
The laughter escaped me, in small bursts of desperate hysteria. I shook him a little and yet he
