person to help.â
âWhy?â Josh asked.
âBecause Amandaâs daddy is William Maxwell,â Cord explained. When Josh shook his head, Cord added, âBig Max is one of the wealthiest men in Charleston. Some folks think Big Max is the one who ought to be helping Amanda, not the church.â
There was obviously still some critical piece of information that Josh was missing. If getting this woman a place to live were that simple, it would have been done long ago.
âWhy isnât he?â Josh asked. âI assume thereâs a reason.â
âThereâs a lot of bad blood between the two of them,â Cord said succinctly.
âThatâs an understatement and itâs not without reason, at least on Amandaâs part,â Caleb said. âSince youâre involved in this now, you should know whatâs going on. Hereâs the short version. Big Max disowned Amanda when she got married. He didnât approve of Bobby OâLeary. He dug in his heels. Amanda refused to cave in to his pressure, so he hasnât had a thing to do with her for almost ten years now. Heâs never even set eyes on his grandkids. I think he regrets all that now, but heâs too stubborn to fix it, and Amandaâs too hurt and has too much pride to turn to him now that sheâs in trouble because of Bobbyâs mistakes.â
Josh got the picture. âBut some folks think she should swallow her pride and go running to daddy now, instead of taking this opportunity away from some other family, one with no other resources.â
âExactly,â Caleb said.
âI suppose I can see their point, but obviously she doesnât think she can turn to her father or doesnât want to after the way he treated her,â Josh said. âI canât say I blame her.â He could empathize. Even if he discovered tomorrow that his father was rolling in dough, it would be a cold day in hell before he ever turned to the man for help, no matter how dire his own circumstances.
âAs far as Amandaâs concerned, her father burned that bridge,â Caleb said. âShe wonât ask him for a dime. So as far as Iâm concerned, sheâs a struggling single mom whoâs as deserving as anyone else. And sheâs doing everything she can to get back on her feet. Itâs not like she came looking for a handout. People just saw a need and wanted to help. Sheâs one of our own. We have an opportunity to help her and weâll all get something out of doing it.â
âSo you want to go ahead, even though itâll anger some members of your congregation?â Josh asked.
âAbsolutely,â Caleb responded without hesitation. âAnd itâs really only one member whoâs dedicated himself to stirring the pot. He just happens to be wealthy and powerful in his own right. He could complicate things if he switches from talk to action.â
âWhat sort of action?â Josh asked.
âLetâs just say heâs politically well connected and could hold things up,â Caleb replied. âEspecially if he thinks heâs doing Big Max a favor in the process.â
âHas he threatened to throw up real roadblocks?â Josh asked.
Caleb shook his head. âNot yet. Mainly heâs been working to get the congregation on his side. Heâs succeeded with some. We expected a larger turnout than this initially.â
âAnd as of this morning, Amandaâs balking,â Cord explained.
âLast night she got wind of the battle that was brewing, and she doesnât want the congregation divided over this,â Caleb said. âIâve tried every way I can think of, but I canât get through to her that itâs only George Winslow flexing his muscles.â
Silence fell as they all pondered how to break the impasse. It was several minutes before Josh realized that Cord was studying him speculatively.
âYou know,
